While I was hiding in the greenhouse yesterday I decided to pot up some Asparagus.

First, build a "tower" of compost in a 2ltr pot.

Then place the asparagus crown, making sure the roots straddle the compost.

Finally top up with more compost.

    Job done.

They look like crowns you have bought, rather than seedlings Dai?

Just curious why you are potting-up, rather than plating-out?

      Tastes like strong runner beans
Turns your wee bright green, and your wee smells of school boiled cabbage

        They are crowns

The picture you've shown are of crowns, and as these can live for 24 years putting them in pots is'nt the best way,
When planted over a ridge with all the roots spread out over the ridge you dont pick any protruding shoots for the first 2 years as the roots need to settle "hence " the crowns you've got should be in their own permanent bed
        like the rhubarb ect.

They ARE shop bought Kristen it takes too long to grow them from seed to harvestable size. I`ve potted them up because I tried planting direct in this garden a couple of years ago and they just disappeared, so will plant them in the green.:dbgrtmb:

I thought that might be your plan :) Good luck with that.

The Pheasants have a go at mine each Spring when the tips come up, so I chuck the netting I use to keep the Cabbage Whites off my Brassicas over the Asparagus for a month or so. Dunno if that was your mischief-maker before, but you might want to take precautions.

I grew from seed because my bed wasn't going to be ready for a year ... Seed only takes a year longer, so unless the bed is already ready, and if you are in a position to sow seed and pot-them-on, I don't think seed takes "longer" :thumb: But there's a few "IFs" in there !

Asparagus root systems are MASSIVE after a couple of years. It'll be interesting to see how your potted ones get on Dai.

Gorgeous, expensive, and sweet and slightly 'nutty' to me. Very nice texture too - just melts in the mouth if picked at the right time.

Probably the most cost effective veg we grow from the point of view of how much it would cost to buy in the shops and how little effort it takes once established in the garden.

I'm not sure that "Dai the Asparagus" has the normal ring to it though? !!!

Just out of interest, do any people called David in Wales get jobs as undertakers?
