I can't get the type of coat that I want on the island Mahdahhlia. I'd seen one I liked on the Cottontraders site, but I've decided to wait now until later in the year.

    Thanks. :)

I think having a budget and sticking to it is key.

I keep spreadsheets to track my spending habits. For instance my gardening spreadsheet of seeds and plants shows me how much I intend to spend this year. I check online or in the sales for any bargains in the list that crop up, and then keep track of how much I’ve ‘saved’ from my original budget.

Right now I’m watching the prices of some plants on ebay, for instance there’s one particular Dahlia I want to grow, I’ll buy one tuber and start it early so I can take cuttings to get more plants come the summer.

I’m growing much more from seed this year rather than buying plants. So I've bought a set of grow lights which were pretty expensive, but they will last for years and pay me back in the long run.

        Other non-gardening things:

Join Quidco and use a cash back credit card for everything (I earn about £200 a year from Quidco and £70 ‘free’ money back from the credit card). (Don’t use a credit card unless you pay it off in full every month though :))

Get the best deal on insurance you possibly can. Don’t have them on DD otherwise they automatically renew and they WILL take advantage of you. Set yourself a reminder and start shopping around a week or two before insurances expire. For car insurance SwiftCover/Axa give me the best deals and rather than re-new I cancel them then start again, that way I collect the £28 Quidco cashback each time (as a ‘new’ customer).

Check your Gas/Electricity/Telephone/Broadband suppliers and switch (via Quidco) if you can get a better deal.
Martin Lewis tell you how: Utilities & Phones: Compare Gas & Electricity, Cheap Home Phones, Capped Tariffs, Water, Mobiles & more.

        Sell unwanted stuff on ebay.

Petrol is my biggest expense (after groceries). There’s not a lot I can do to reduce the overall commuting mileage, but I am trying to drive more frugally when I remember, it makes about 5% mpg difference. At weekends we avoid using the car unless we have to, and try and combine journeys.

*dim*, my wife worked for a letting agency and quite often bumped into the same cleaning company (who were preparing houses for the next tenants), they used products from Lidl, the W5 range is very good and very cheap. So we now use the W5 cleaning products all the time now at home :dbgrtmb:

Another One I Just remembered, Again, when I was a wee Laddie.

When I could not Afford a hair cream, like Brylcreem (A little Dab'll Do Ya ), I mixed Sugar And Water In a Milk Bottle. I placed it in a cupboard to Dissolve for a couple of days then dampened my hair with some, combed into place, it dried Stiff..

Ah well, we're rapidly getting to the stage that the nits could be harvested and used as a form of free protein. Every cloud, arf, arf.....

We never had any problems with head pets as i call them in my family when we were kids and always had visits from the nit nurse at school every now and then:D

I don't know about anyone else but just talking about the little monsters has me scratching my head:heehee:

Don't waste money on expensive nit combs from the pharmacy ! Get a cheap 'pet comb' from Wilkos for a fraction of the price - they are exactly the same.

P.S. Don't tell your kids where you got them from.

Lidl have Parazone on special for 59p (I buy ten at a time when it's on special), although the bog should never be that bad that you require the nuclear option anyway!

As we all need to do some shopping in s/markets, only do it in the final two hours of opening - I regularly find factory reared chickens for less than a quid, and it is my moral duty to buy them rather than let them be thrown in the bin. Roast overnight using the timer and cheap leccy. Strip the carcasses of meat and boil for stock. More than good enough for chicken pie.

Buy veg from the market, meat from the butchers (it really is cheaper as it will not be pumped up with water).

If your motoring is on a budget, run a car that is older than circa 2002 - this negates the potentially expensive failure of electronic components. If an older car will not start £100 to £200 generally sorts it, with the modern electronics you need to budget anything up to a £1000. And secondhand parts are frequently not an option, as many components have to be programmed in and this is a once only process.

I buy all my coats in charity shops, along with work clothes.

Cook at least one extra portion and freeze them.

Share food with your neighbours - if it's cheaper buy big and share the spare, it cuts both ways around here.........

Every time one of my socks wears out, I throw it out and keep the other one.

When another one reaches the end of its life, I do the same again and I've got a pair.

They may not necessarily match, but who cares?

(Actually, Mrs Trunky cares quite a lot, but hey ho!)
