The 'Q' was for our Manxmen by the name of Quayle, can't remember the Englishman's name.

People think this island is in the back of beyond and dated. But it surprises a lot of people when I tell them how much technology derives from this island.

For instance, we produced the first driving licences with video mug shots. The R.N.L.I. was founded here.

Eleven years ago I was one of the first people to have a leg plaster-cast that could be taken off when my broken leg was at rest. Invented by the chap who made it for me at Nobles Hospital here. He made the cast as normal then cut it down the front twice, just enough to be able to take my leg out. Then he attached strips of Velcro with studs, to hold it in place for moving around.

I was in that cast for three months, so it was a relief to remove it and have a good scratch as I'd been operated on before it went on, it also allowed air to get to the wound and heal it.

I'm not sure why, but I find that quite amusing. The idea that a shop runs a senior citizens day. I don't know why that amuses me, but it does

 

my local Tesco has just got in some bare root trees today

never looked at all of them ... but did see nice japanese maples, silver birch, etc etc...

all are approx 4 feet tall and only £4 each

the maples look like a good buy .... last year I paid £23.99 for a japanese maple bloodgood that was just over 1 foot high ... planted it, and it lost all it's leaves (that was in july ... so hoping it recovers in spring)

 

went to poundland yesterday .... loads of bare root roses .... all colours

1,5kg of bonemeal packs plus loads of summer flowering bulbs

loads more .... never bought much, as I was in a rush .... will have a closer look today

 

Afew months back they had 12ltrs of cooking oil with a shelf price of 12.60 or something,and they where reducing it by £1.35.
When it was scanned at the till it was coming up as £1.35 so I cleared the shelf,my landrover runs well on cooking oil and £1.35 for 12lts is alot better than £1.35/ltr for diesel.

Popped into our local store today, all they have are some Kilmarnock Willows for £7; nice looking specimens and some Roses and Beech in those cardboard tubes for £2.50 each or two for £4. Didn't look at the roses but the poor Beech trees had been pruned back way to hard, "within an inch of their lives" quite literally, most were no more than 2 or 3" high and yet the tubes are around 16-18" :nono:

 

I don't go near those automated tills in any shop. They break down whenever I use them. In fact in B & Q a couple of weeks ago I was told I had to use it as the normal tills were all being upgraded. I asked the chap if he would run my items through for me, which he did...........it broke down! Having put the key in and sorted it out, it then wouldn't swallow the bank note I had so he had to go off and swap it for another one. I did warn him!

These are not the only machines I have problems with, I'm told it's something to do with the amount of static electricity in my body. Not sure about that. I get the same problems with certain makes of watches as well, they just go berserk!

Yes, I know, it's just me that's berserk!

 

don't see the point of those machines

at every machine, they have a member of staff acting like a security guard watching and ensuring that every item gets scanned

they may as well just have that member of staff operating a checkout point

They only pay for one member of staff, and the mugs scan and do all the work
therefore the wage bill is reduced by six till staff
