unfortunatly we where ordered to remove the large box balls in our small pond garden:( to make formal beds.
i did argue to keep such features but the boss made the final decision:cry3:
it hurts my heart to destroy a healthy mature plant like this :cry3:

if it was my paving then yes it would :dbgrtmb:
but these rich townys fancy it to be rustic, i'm sure i'll be called to their bedside in hospital once they've slipped over and broken their hip and get orders to clean it :D

      That was a bit drastic.

With regard to looking rustic, similar problem with historic buildings, because the render fell off before living memory, folk think the building is meant to look like that & don't want it re rendered.

Then they complain when water gets in:DOH:

Out on a limb here, good point Dai.

I think I must be a budding rich towny, because I would not pressure wash that paving.
I'm also not a lover of box balls, so I would have got shot and planted something a bit brighter looking.:)

don't get me wrong my employers are great.
but i don't tell them how to recruit the next deputy director or to invest in high end markets, so when a unreplaceble asset to the garden is removed i'm allowed to sulk a bit.
i will update with the new plans once decided.

Does seem a shame, but maybe the grand formal plan will look nicer in the long run.

              rough plan is:
removal of all turf, red dwarf berberis as edging, low growing hebes as bedding with rosa winchester cathedral (standard) in middle. to be tweeked as decided on :rolleyespink:

i thought of that but the root ball had grown under the york stone path, it would of took ages to dig one root ball out safely.
the weight of the rootball would almost be a tonne and with tight access we wouldn't be able to move or lift it also moveing a plant that old would always have a chance of dieing of shock
