I dropped into my local amenity site (tip) today and rescued this Maranta Leuconeura.

As you can see it looks a bit sorry for itself. Since these pictures I've tidied it up and repotted it. There was rock hard garden soil in the pot, so I teasled out the roots bit by bit and re-potted it. Surprisingly there were a couple of new shoots struggling to grow. Hopefully it will pick up now and with some TLC it should do okay. :)

A nice find Sheal, do they let you rummage through the skips?

      Thanks John,

We have containers at out site which are purely for dumping and obviously we can't get into those. But there is an area set aside for anything re-cycleable and a garage type building for anything that shouldn't be out in the rain.

Anything from wood, doors etc to three piece suites and electrical, which people take away to re-furbish. All garden stuff is set aside for composting. :)

It's like that at the dump in my son's town, they have a shed and anything recyclable is put in there and people can buy it for a charity donation. Quite a good idea.

          Fantastic Sheal.

They won't even let us pick an elastic band up at our tip, they love sending it all to land fill & then banging on at us how much more poll tax they are going to charge us because we send so much stuff to landfill.

I only wish all sites had this policy, it would be good for the community and RECYCLE

Ours has a policy of once it is through the gate it is Council property and removal is theft
I would not mind IF they sorted the stuff and sent anything of use to a charity site or community
To see perfectly good but old garden tools slung in the crusher, never to be used again :cry3:
If you drive in, and some other guy/gal says cor I would not mind that mate
The council workers will not let you leave until you have emptied the stuff you brought into the crusher, I tried saying it was just the cushion I was discarding and not the old computer, but they would not wear it (it was obvious really as I had the items in a gash sack)
I thought oh oh they have a scam, retrieve the stuff and sell it on, so chatted and offered them cash, They nearly got the police on me for bribery Tossers

Only way round it at our tip is to get it off someone before it hits the ground.

You have to take in to consideration we're on an island and were fast running out of landfill space. There was a huge incinerator built here about 6 years ago so very little goes to landfill now.

            Good point Sheal,

The rest of the planet is trying to pretend they are not on an island though.

You're right Ziggy, the government keeps spouting about us being more 'green' but I can't see why they don't encourage re-cycling like we do here. Perhaps it's the health and safety issue again. They obviously think we're all incapable of looking after ourselves and have no common sense, which brings the question to mind, what did everyone do before all this hype? It's ridiculous!

The "tip police" operate at our local facility too. I blagged nearly 100 pots off a lady before she chucked them - little Hitler rushed over and said that I couldn't do that as it was theft! I chucked them in the boot anyway, told him that he had my registration number and CCTV, and if he wanted to be on the front page of the Oxford Mail just call the "old bill"!
When I sent a snotty email to the council about it, they said that whilst it is policy, it is only really to stop people jumping in the skips to retrieve "finds" and that they are happy for people to make arrangements between themselves. They do not operate a help yourself section for H&S reasons - apparently their insurers insisted that it would have to be manned exclusively and full time.

I can therefore see their point but believe it or not we are adults
(Well I am, though I see others who aint got a clue so for their protection we all suffer)
A thing called in the old days common sence

I saw a whole tea chest of LEGO being ditched, which I would have loved for my grandkids
The thought police is, the LEGO may have been played with by a child with an infection
Well even without that information IF I had got it, I would have sterilised it anyway before giving it to OUR KIDS, just as you would with reclaimed plant pots
Over protection of an ignorant generation causes ALL to suffer for the few

My current job does not help my blood pressure either, only six weeks to go now thank £eity Tax credits
Unbeliveable how so many think that society owes them a living

New child, no interest in the child just how much will I get even before they register it,
I have had a few call within twenty minutes of the birth to claim, and it is not I have had a baby, it is how much will I get now FIRST

Child poverty, in the UK, I do not understand, anyone with an income of NIL or below £17k gets £80 a week for a child, Adults having to buy food and clothes, live on less than that, so how can a child be in POVERTY on £80 a week ?

Or I have chucked my job in how much Working Tax credit will you give me now, err the clue is in WORKING tax credit Madam
Yes but when I was working I only got £224 a week and you gave me £40 a week tax credit So I have chucked my job I am expecting the £264 from you (the tax payer) Now I have just £65pw Job seekers allowance do you top it up

              Err NO
Somali been in the country three months, you only give me £26k this is not enough to live on (news bulletien Somalia rich family in OX and Cart living in hut with boiled rice and sweetcorn)
She had nine children, and the complaint was that the Range Rover they had could not take them all on the school run
I advised she sold the Range Rover and bought a mini bus then :-)
My Guberment disipline hearing is in June:-(

it all depends on the people running the recycle centres .... many are subcrontacted to private companies

if they have 'salvage rights', they are allowed to sell items to people who request them .... if they don't, they are not allowed to sell (or keep for themselves), and everything has to be put in the skips

we are lucky in our area .... we can buy (or sell) .... I have seen people selling scrap metal (copper boilers) to the 'governor' of our local recycle centre

so phone your local council and find out if your local recycle centre has salvage rights

                Great find Sheal!!

Its nicely marked too..I love it.

I have no Idea where our tip is. We had some Canary Island Date Palms amongst the flower beds in the local park last summer, bet they ended up in a tip as those palms won't like our winter.
