I don't understand it. There seems to be something about Snowdrops that makes people pay huge prices. They all look the same to me.

When chatting to the owner of a nursery in Halifax, a few years ago, he told me one of his clients had a collection of 500 different snowdrops.

I'm the same as you Peter, never paid any deailed attention to them really. They are nice seeing as they herald the end of Winter and I like them in masses but one is the same as another, isn't it?

I can't say I ever saw any like that Peter, then neither would I be able to pay such extortionate prices.

Years ago I came accross plants at £300 and more.

Seed may be cheap enough for those Snowdrops unless they are rare.

      :D

I've grown about 3 different varieties but only after seeing them whilst browsing round garden centres, I didn't go out to find them. I love them but am quite happy with the 'common or garden' variety.

£700+....blimey , that could be an expensive snack for a mouse..:heehee:

Imagine paying £700+ for one bulb, planting it, and then coming out the next morning only to find a squirrel had dug it up:(:loll:

Do you think it would be wise for me to Fes up, and tell them I broke in and used my felt tip pen during the night, or should I leave it until next year :loll:

Actually in the press Dundee courier, the receptacle of the snowdrop in question is bright yellow not green?

That earlier picture, with the smiley face, is NOT Green Tear ...

I assumed that was the one with the new record ('coz I can imagine that a Smiley Face could get people into a bidding war - well those i the more-money-than-sense bracket ...)

But just for a yellow receptacle? If so thats NUTS !!

OK, those useless Daily Mail journalists have got it wrong.

The photo of the Smiley Face snowdrop is Galanthus elwesii which was introduced at start of 20th century, so there are plenty of them to be had cheaply. That markings vary, so you may not get a grumpy face!

The Green Tear snowdrop has distinctive marking (and I believe unusually) on its outer petals:
