Now would be a realy good time (still dormant):sofa: and shoots are very brittle so do before any new growth has started, but why do you want to split them up ????

Mainly because they are getting very congested where they are. Would also like to start a new bed. I've been told that this will set them back for a year or two is this true? The crowns are about 12 to 13 years old. :)

    Hi Jiffy

I would start off with fresh new plants the others are just to old to re-plant
lots of new varieties as well that you could use , nows a good time to put your order in and to get the bed ready for planting , I have said new plants as you are right the old plants would take two years to re-settle in , so thats why I have sugested new plants full of vigour that will take the same time before you can start to crop them (only a few though)

Don't! Mature Asparagus plants are almost impossible to transplant. You can start a new bed but that will take 3 years to become productive (so if you have space retain the existing bed until the new one is productive)
