    anyone had any luck with these or can point me in the right direction?

    goggled it:heehee: but not much came up, also The Giant Himalayan Lily,

    i have decided to go a bit exotic this year as i want to broaden what i grow, i usually go with the usual suspects but i am looking to have a bit of a wow factor

        The Giant Himalayan Lily (Cardiocrinum giganteum) is easy to grow, and I prefer it to the tall Asiatic types.
        The trouble is buying bulbs which are mature enough to flower in the first year.

        Two main points;
        1 - they are monocarpic. So if they do bloom in the first year it could be three or four more years until the offset bulbs will be of blooming size.
        2 - make sure that the growing medium is very free draining! I didn't, so after mine bloomed (at a height of 3metres) I lost all the offsets in a mild but wet winter. Better if you can give them winter cover.

        Well worth the effort though.

          Five to seven years is often quoted!

          I've waited seven years for my seed grown Strelitzia to flower, and watching it's first flower forming is soooo rewarding!

            Funny this subject should be here. Husband was just looking at them in a gardening book. It says it does not need staking, I am doubting that. He may get some.

            Hiya redstar.

            I have some and can assure you, they don't need staking. The stems are quite thick, actually, more like trunks than stems :)

            Tree lilies or Cardiocrinum Freddy?

            I staked my Cardiocrinums very much just in case!

            Tree Lilies. If you haven't already, take a look at the link/thread posted by JWK.

            Cheers...Freddy.
