When to apply lime

    Hi all could anyone tell me when's the best time to apply lime to the soil & which veg's like lime & which veg's dont I've just been given a big bag of the stuff & dont know when to apply it & for what thanks Mick

    check your soil first a cheap soil test kit is all thats needed you are aiming for a neutral ph i.e 7.0
    Cabbages and their ilk if the ph is borderline a sprinkle of lime a couple of weeks before planting.
    Spuds if lime is used it can encourage scab.
    Never apply lime to close to applying manure at least a couple of months for good rotted manure,otherwise you get the same effect as having a wee in a toilet with bleach in it goes all frothy as gas is created!:sofa:
    The bag you have been given is it crushed limestone(grey in colour)or white powder which is slated lime not recommended for garden use,but I have used to control club root.
    Lime only needs applying every couple of years usually if you have acid soil but do a soil test first.

    I've had a divvil of a job trying to find lime as a powder and not in the granulated form. I'm a bit Old fashioned that way. I've had to order it so my spring cabbages will have to wait a bit longer. :WINK1: Cheers, Tony.

    Thanks Lazydog its the granulated stuff I did'nt know there was a difference
