The whole thing is just about to burst into bloom - it's a shame that I'm going to have to leave it behind.

      It's outdoors!
Described as half hardy, but this is now entering it's fourth year.

That's amazing Keith - I can't believe that they would survive outdoors and I can't believe that they would flower so early. I grew some from seed - but I think they have gone now. The greenhouse is so full of plants overwintering that I forget what exactly is there.

I grew this for a number of years outside.
I found it self seeded, seedlings pop up all over the place.
Mine was the species with orange flowers

I think it was wiped out by a cold winter way back.
      Its never returned anyway.

I'm growing these from seed this year longk, I'm amazed yours is about to flower. You must have missed those minus 10C frosts in Jan?

How fast does it grow and does it need support to climb up a wooden fence?

PeterS - I'm no longer surprised by it, but blooming by mid March is a bit of a record. Last year it was the 5th of April.

Pete - it does self seed, but autumn seedlinmgs are not a problem and the spring ones are easily taken care of. This one came through the winter of 2010/11 easily!

JWK - the lowest I recorded in January was -10°c! Once it gets going it grows fast. I use garden wire, although it will cling on by itself.
