Here's another extract from an article in the Amateur Gardening Magazine........not good new for those in the East and South East of the UK:cry3:

"Gardeners in the South are on track for the worst water shortages since the Summer of 1976 - whilst those in the North face the risk of flooding/

The North - South divide emerged as the Department for Environment. Food and Rural Affairs [DEFRA] declared the South East officially in drought. Environment Secretary Caroline Spelman called an emergency Water Industry summit and said "Ensuring we have enough water is vitally important." Lincolnshire, Cambridge, parts of Bedfordshire and Northampshire and West Norfolk are in drought. Shropshire. Nottinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, East Sussex and Kent are at high risk.

Water firms are expected to announce hose pipe bans within 4 week. Ground water levels in regions of the South East are now lower than in 1976, while the giant Bewl Water reservoir in Kent is just 41% full.

RHS Chief Advisor Guy Barter said "There is a lot that gardeners can do that does not involve extra watering. Spiking and feeding a lawn in Spring helps it hold up in dry weather. Then if it goes brown, it will recover faster when rain returns. It's a good idea to plant hardy plants early to avoid the hot weather, so that they get roots into the soil to seek out moisture.

The Horticultural Trades Association [HTA] warned of hose pipe bans before Easter. During the last wide spread ban, in 2006, Garden Centres saw a 20% drop in sales as people were put off gardening by water shortages. A HTA spokesman said "We would like to see the use of drip irrigation permitted during hose pipe bans." But gardeners in Scotland, Northern Ireland. Wales and the North West may wonder what all the fuss is about. In some Northern and Highland regions, rivers are close to bursting, raising the risk of flooding."

Bet that cheered you up, eh?!!

Was on the news today, lots of rain expected next week for the south east. I think the met office said something like as much rain next week as they've had in the last 2 months.

Copied from the Met site, 11Mar to 20th Mar
        2012:

Following some quite changeable weather this week settled conditions will develop across most of the UK this weekend and persist through next week onwards into the middle of March. As such many areas can expect to remain dry or largely dry, though some northwestern parts and western fringes will see some rain or drizzle at times, more especially at first and again later next week. Otherwise variable, but at times large, amounts of cloud, with southern and eastern parts probably seeing the best of any sunshine. Daytime temperatures largely mild, and locally very mild, early next week. Some downward trend to nearer or just below normal maximum temperatures and increasing risk of overnight fog and frost later next week, especially to the
south. Most likely turning milder again by mid-March.

I think we have had as much rain in two days as we have had in the last two months.

For the last two years here, April and May have been totally dry over about a six week period. Other than that, the rest of the the last two and a half years have been pretty much rain, rain and more rain.

I think that East coast and the South, South East of the UK is going to need a lot more constant rain to get them out of the drought:sad:

You're right there Armandii. I was living in Essex in '76' and it was bad enough then.
With all the properties that have been built there since it's not going to make it any easier. Apparently the 'go ahead' has been given for more reservoirs, but where are they going to put them?

The sooner they install water meters for all households the better - might make some people think about how much water they're using, especially the ones who fill up those huge pools in their gardens in summer.

Sometimes wish we could see less rain. Since 1st January we have had about 14 days that were completely dry. There are some lawns where if you walk on them you are leaving muddy footprints.I do not think we will ever be in drought conditions

The trouble is that the people who have huge pools wouldn't care about the extra they'll pay if on water meters.

The problem with water meters is the myth.
            • The water companies tell us we are likely to save money.
            • The environmentalists tell us we will use less water.
            • In the modern era most households have labour saving devices such as Washing machines, dishwashers, outside taps etc.
No-one will come along and say how much it would cost if we use the same water with a meter fitted, as we use without the meter.
            WHY?

Or just one day's heavy rain for me, which is forecast for today.

Has anybody else noticed a load of links now appearing on the top of the Met Offices' weather forcast? So much stuff that stuff that you now need to page down to see the weather:
