"Would that not only (possibly) occur unless all participants of the conversation have completely 'opted out'?"

Well ... the site administration may have an elapsed-time setting for purging PMs/Conversations - and when that date comes around anything older will go ... regardless of whether the participants have "left" the conversation or not.

But I have no idea if that is how it works I'm afraid.

If all parties "leave" a conversation then maybe the system deletes it there-and-then, but I can't see many people bothering to leave conversations, in practice.

I would like to say thank you to all involved - it seems very simple to use. The only points that struck me are :-

    1) Like Pete and some others I can't upload pictures from my hard disk but PhotoBucket works fine.

    2) Is there a spell checker? I find that a useful feature as someone who can't spul.

    3) In the old system when you pressed preview, it showed the previous posts and also any posts made since starting to write. I found this very useful as I often wanted to respond to and check back on what people had said - and also avoid repeating what someone has posted since starting to write. Posts often cross.

I have no problem uploading photos here (and in fact I think the new photo upload mechanism is the best I have seen). I'm sure we can fix this for you

Built into most browsers these days. Dunno about IE though, haven't checked that of late. I'm using Chrome, and when I was using Firefox that had it too.

Only think I can suggest if that you RightClick the REPLY link next to a post and choose "Open in new tab" or "Open in new window", then you can compose your reply, and use PREVIEW, and toggle back to the original thread (and even refresh if it you want to see if there are any new replies) before actually posting.

It's getting late, but I'm sure the GC menu bars used to be underneath the GC masthead:

    gcmasthead.png

And there's now loads of 'blue sky' above the masthead/menu bars.

Thanks Kristen for your helpful comments

    1) Like Pete and some others I can't upload pictures from my hard disk but PhotoBucket works fine.

I suspect that there may be something that is incompatable with my Windows 98 XP. I did on one occassion manage to upload a picture from my hard disk. But I have never managed to repeat it. Subsequently it has done funny things like not showing any pictures at all in preview mode and not asking me if I wanted thumbnails or full size. Then when I pressed 'Post Reply' it showed three thumbnails at the bottom of the post for the first time. I usually had to reboot to get the machine working normally again.

    2) Is there a spell checker? I find that a useful feature as someone who can't spul.

Good idea to use the IE spellchecker. I just used the one in the previous software as the button was there.

    3) In the old system when you pressed preview, it showed the previous posts and also any posts made since starting to write. I found this very useful as I often wanted to respond to and check back on what people had said - and also avoid repeating what someone has posted since starting to write. Posts often cross.

I take your point - there are ways to work round this.

You're not trying to upload huge pictures are you? I don't know what the limit is, but if you can resize them to 800 x 600 and reduce the size-quality (I use 70%) first, and then upload, they will only be 100-200 KB (in principle the new system will do that reduction for you, but it will NOT accept very large files, so uploading straight-from-camera files is out of the question, in which case you might as well do the whole job before uploading ...)

I have just been playing about with the pictures. As I say I have one one occassion uploaded a picture from my hard disk.

I tried just now. If I tried to load a large picture - I got a red error message - too large. That was OK because it, at least, recognised my request

I resize my pictures for Photo Bucket and they are nearly always less than 100K. If I try to upload one of those the software simply ignores my request.

EDIT I have just tried to upload three pictures, which was apparently ignored and didn't show up in the preview. But when I 2009_05290006.JPG 2009_05290005.JPG 2011_04050004.JPG I found these thumbnails. If I then clicked on EDIT it showed me a list of attached files and asked me if I wanted a thumbnail or full image. Perhaps I have to Post then Edit to reveal any attached files. In this case I have selected the first as a thumbnail and ignored the other two.

Sorry I was in the middle of editing. I only chose to include one as a thumbnail - but I see that it has included all three. The funny placing which I haven't altered may simply be where the cursor was at the time.

Well I'm glad that they uploaded OK :)

After upload I get one "entry", per file uploaded, in the "Attached files" block under the Message Editing Box, and on each one I can choose "Insert [Thumbnail] [Full image]"

Here's a screenshot (only has one uploaded file showing). Not sure how it relates to what you are seeing, and a bit difficult to guess what the problem you are having is (without being able to see your screen) but in case it is some help:

This is very strange. If I upload a file from the first (simple) Message Editing Box. I get no indication that anything has happened. If I then go into More Options sometimes I can see the "Attached Files" block but sometimes I can't. The last couple of times I have tried I have seen the "Attached Files" box, but on several previous occasions it never appeared. Its almost as if the computer hangs for 20 seconds sometimes and perhaps if I waited long enough the "Attached Files" box would appear - but if I am impatient I get the impression that it will never appear and so I exit.

I must work on this. The facility is certainly there in principle - its just that it is not working smoothly for me.

Thanks for your help Kristen. I think I will go and sleep on it now.

Its coming clearer. But still funny.

If I upload a file from the first Editing Box - nothing appears to have happened until I select MORE OPTIONS - then I can see the "Attached Files" box. I can now upload more files and see them in the "Attached Files" box as long as there was already one in there.

But if I go straight to the MORE OPTIONS page, uploading a file does not make the "Attached Files" box appear. If there was already a file in it uploaded from the first Editing Box then I can upload more files from that page. But If I delete all the attached files the box disappears, and doesn't reappear it I try to upload a file again.

The post above shows what happens if I try to upload a file from the first Editing Box. It doesn't tell me that a file has been uploaded and doesn't show the "Attached Files" box. But clearly a file has been uploaded.

Having said that, I will swear that I never upoaded the file in the above post. I had played about with files and then exited GC without posting, and re-entered GC to write pure text in the above post.
