Has anyone else bought some general purpose compost from Wickes this year? It seems MUCH more woody than previously. I guess this could be good for me as I'm trying to reduce the amount of peat I use so this mixed with home made stuff might just be the ticket for this year but I was wondering how it will compare to previous years' performance...

I've seen some recently ... I agree with the wood ... and it looks like a lot of the rest is made from grass clippings

I've been mixing some John Innes with mine this year.

      Thanks for the warning Loofah.
I'll have to check others out. I was impressed with the quality last year, so it's a great pity.

I've been using Wickes for some years and get through many thousands of litres per year. As I've just started on my last bag from last year I shall be going into Wickes on Wednesday for some more. I probably won't open it until this bag is used up but I'll give you my opinion then.

Thanks for the heads up as I'll only buy 300 litres to start with. :dbgrtmb:

Yes I noticed it didn't seem as nice. Loads of fiberous bits in it. The B&Q stuff is still the same though.

Don't forget that the 'MyWickes' £5 off when you spend £25 instore vouchers expire 31st March 2012 (I've got 2 left, Mrs Scrungee with separate account has 3 left), so it's 600 litres required to get the multi-save + one £5 off voucher saving. I tend to find there's always some weak point on garden centre compost bags where it's already spilling out enabling a quick quality control check.

I usually use the B&Q compost (tried a cheaper one from Asda last year, which was very woody).

However, while I was at Bents the other day I bought a bag of Westland ericaceous compost (couldn't be bothered going to B&Q as well).

It was very woody (see pic). Won't be buying it again - I'll stick to B&Q from now on.

Flippin heck! .... you use lots of compost!

have you tried the stuff from the recycle centres (made from the green/brown bins) ...

it's good as a soil conditioner/ compost, but I doubt its good on its own for using as a potting soil medium,

perhaps mix some of this with topsoil, and you may have a good compost mix?

it's pretty cheap .... approx £35 per tonne delivered (cubic meter)

I think they also do one with added topsoil but it costs slightly more

Thanks, dim :dbgrtmb:. The problem with delivery by the tonne is where it will be dumped and how to move it. I'm not physically able to do much heavy work that includes any bending (bad back). At Wickes I only buy 4 bags (300 litres) at a time and they load it into my car for me. When I get home Mrs Shiney I can slide the bags out of the boot and onto a barrow and then Mrs Shiney gives me a hand offloading the bags at the side of the greenhouse.

The bags of compost are used only for seed compost, potting up, making hanging baskets and patio pots (apart from the few I use as growbags). Last year we got through about 6,000 litres (I think) and they cost £260.

I don't know how to equate cubic metres with litres so can't compare price but couldn't cope with bulk deliveries.

Ahhh compost thread time , it must be March
I have used Wickes for the last 2 years , following the reviews on here. Very pleased with it . Have they got the offer on at the moment , was it 4 bags for £12... nothing mentioned on the website
I got 4 bags of JAB from my local GC , it does have some rather big twigs in it , some could actually be defined as branches. I always sieve my compost when pricking out , I save the resulting debris from this to go in the bottom 2" of my containers later in the year , so nothing is wasted really. :blue thumb:
Hi Merle , Bents GC is for looking at not for buying from , unless you play for Man U or City , the price tags are a bit heavy

Harry, two years ago it was £12 for 4 bags, last year it was £13 and I understand it's still £13.

Can you post a pic of what it looks like?

We've got 2 x vouchers for £5 off £25 spend and another 2 x £5 off £30 spend (diffrerent account - one each) for use at Wickes that we use around this time of year to stock up with compost - I don't want to buy 1,500 litres and find it's rubbish compared to last year's quality.

I bought 4 bags for £13 2 weeks ago (same offer as last year); I've used 2 bags so far and its just as good as last year, I'm still very impressed :dbgrtmb: , no wood to speak of, perhaps there are different batches???

I picked up a couple of bags of Wilkos general purpose compost today, not the cheapest one they do but the next one up, that was very woody. I wasn't bothered as it was just to bulk out a large pot and mix with other stuff.
