No I didn't know the N. Sylvestris were perennial either, I'll mulch over them this autumn for protection rather than digging them up, thanks!

Hi Itman. I have ordered my seeds from THE TOBACCO SEED COMPANY just google Tabacco Seed and you will find it. A pack of 100 seeds of Golden Virginia is £4.95 and postage is £1.50 thus £6.45 inclusive.:dbgrtmb:

What's the end product like though is it nicer than fags bought in a shop? And I assume a lot less deadly? I'm going to have to try this in the new year I think....

I don`t smoke anymore , but really nice threat....as I`m Italian and growing tabacco bring memory of my childhood , my grandfather was growing commercial tabacco , after he realise that it was more profictable then growing commercial tomatos.....the only thing I remember well is that the plants over there , where reaching over 8 feets tall , plus I don`t know if anyone know but even the flower are collected commercially for the production on home insecticide.

I'm bumping this one for Madmick, who was asking about growing them on another thread.

This will be the first year i'm growing it, I assume you just cultivate just like any other Nicotiana.

My Brother did an article on a Tobacco farm in Hampshire, not there any more but obviously a viable crop in the uk.

We have sown a few seeds of the Golden Virginia and some have already come through, this was just a trial to see how easily they germinate. Be interesting to see if they will survive indoors until the weather is clement enough to put them out into a cold greenhouse.

The leaflet that came with them said to use sterile seed compost to avoid damping off, as copper based fungicides have been withdrawn.

Have they taken Bordeaux mixture off the shelves already? I was going to stock up on that:(

tobacco seeds are a pleasure to sow because they are not fussy, have an excellent germination rate and they grow fast into beautiful plants.

Seeds are in, don't sow them with damp hands though as they are tiny & stick to your fingers.

Mine are Burley, all come up but not moving much yet, probably need a bit more space but are too small to prick out.
