I think What's New does the same thing (all threads that have new posts in chronological order) but the difference is that once a post is READ it is no longer shown - although you can use the "All recent messages" link on that page to also see today's threads that you have read.

Personally I'm happy that things that I have read drop off the What's New list, but if you prefer to see them then, yeah, clicking What's New and then having to click "All recent messages" will be a pain. (I only find that I need to use "All recent messages" occasionally, e.g. when I want to refer back to something I have read and now need to re-visit for some reason - usually because I'm being dopey and the penny only dropped 5 minutes after reading it!!)

I choose to use "Watched Threads" first because when time is tight I want to make sure I have seen anything that I have replied to (or Watched) so that I am not too slow in responding, but there's no need - What's New should do the same as Today's Posts used to - but if that's not working for you in a way that suits you then Speak Up and I'll try to come up with something that might.

Both those show posts for more than just "today", so if you miss a day you won't miss any threads you have been involved in, whereas "Today's posts" on the old system had that risk - although there was "My posts" or somesuch that helped a bit (but the moment you visited the old system all your old posts were marked "read" so if you didn't deal with them in that session then there was no way to refer back to things that were "unread" on a subsequent visit).

Used your link in previous post Kristen about E mail alerts.
I unticked every box on that page a long time ago and they still keep coming.

Does this mean I need cancel E mails for every thread on a one off basis?
Which appears to me to mean I have to Unwatch that thread, so in effect I'll have no watched threads, this is all getting beyond me.

    I've cracked it.
I'll only ever look at "recent messages".

And change my E mail address.

    Pete,
If you click on "What's New" you will get all the new posts that haven't been read by you. The threads that you have already contributed to, but have new posts, will have a small version of your avatar at the left hand side.

I don't think so. I get Emails for any replies to CONVERSATIONS (not sure I've seen a way to turn those off), but I'm not getting any to Threads that I have replied in. However, its a couple of weeks since I turned them off, and maybe all the replies I am getting are only on threads newer than that ...

... or perhaps you just need to restart your browser. I have had options like that not set themselves, so might just be worth checking that they are still unticked in your settings (I had to reboot when that happened to me, then I went in and changed the settings again and then my choices "stuck")

    Bogus one you mean?

Might give you some grief if you lose your password, or something else. But I wouldn't want an avalanche of emails either ... all I can say is I'm not getting them, and I have those 4 boxes un-ticked, which is of no help I'm sure, but hopefully means that there is a way of fixing it.

Seriously I think I'm working out the E mail problem.
Its threads I replied to before I removed all the ticks in the boxes, (I believe) that are giving me E mails.

I'm now going round changing those one by one to Watched threads without E mails.

    Yes thankyou jiffy.

Just found a better way to stop ones already coming.
In "watched threads" select the threads you want and the drop down menu at the bottom gives the option to stop E mails on selected.

      Hi Kristen,

Thanks for taking the time to answer my queries:smile:

The bits that I am talking about on the home page is those two speech bubbles{One is blue and the other is a salmon colour which is smaller than the blue one}.I can't see what function they are for unless for decorative reasons:snork:

Also if you go to the General Gardening Disscussion threads, there are posts at the top that are todays, then if you scroll down there are some sticky topics that have posts from like August 2011 etc and then if you scroll down even further you come across posts that have been posted perhaps five minutes ago so I am having scroll past a lot to get to stuff I might be interested in reading:gaah:

Unfortuneatly,I am not computer savvy enough to try and learn even more new things because it seems on this forum,I just get the hang of where everything is and start to enjoy it then we have another change round and I am all confused and have a headache again:snork: {We must be on the forth/fifth change upgrade} I feel with the changes it is one step forward and three steps back at times and even I have noticed that many of the original posters have left the forum, after changes never to return

The darker coloured 'bubbles' denote unread posts. As an example I've just used 'Mark Forums As Read' on Gardeners Corner Question Time:

Ah! Got it now :) The "brighter" ones indicate that the forum contains threads that you have not yet read, and the "dimmer" one means you have read everything.

I think that's coz there are quite a lot of Stickies (with the Pin in the "Start Date" column) ... so the most recent Sticky ("Water Conservation Gardening") has been replied to recently, other stickies less recently down to "Poisonous Plants - A summary" which has not been replied to since 4-Aug-2011, and then the first post under the stickies has been replied to today.

Beware that you can change the Sort Order in a forum, so yours may already be showing a different order to mine. At the very bottom is a little "tab" labelled "Thread Display Options" and if you click that you can set the Sort order for the forum (Mine is set to "last message time - Descending")

Yes, I have noticed that posting rate seems to be down, and most probably that is because people are having difficulty. If they can't post there is no easy way for them to tell us that they are stuck :( and on the internet most people "click off" when they get stuck.

I think trying to read the "recent stuff" using the Forum List on the home page is probably more tortuous than using one of the other methods (although I appreciate that isn't what you have done before)

"Watched Threads" (on the "Forums" menu) will show you any thread that you have replied to, or any thread where you pressed the "Watch this thread" link, which has a NEW reply. I find that the easiest way to keep up with any thread that I have been involved in (I normally don't remember to press "Watch this thread" on other ones, but if you can that's a good idea too for threads where you have not replied, but would like to know if anyone else replies)

Then "What's New" shows you every thread that has new replies which you have not yet read. That's a good way of seeing other recent activity.

If you particularly liked the Home Page method, and you used to dip into only certain forums (i.e. ignoring all the ones that did not interest you) then on your Profile (hover mouse over your User Name, top right) there is a link "What's New" and no there you can TICK all the forums you are NOT interested in, and they will be excluded from the What's New page - so it will only have threads from forums you are likely to enjoy.

If you try any of that, and can't make it happen for you, Speak Up! and I'll try to guide you through it - this remote-control stuff is much more difficult than if I was sitting next to you and could point to the screen and say CLICK THAT ONE !!!

Marley for one has made comment somewhere about posting 40 per page ... please do not ask me where because I would have to look here, there and everywhere and I can't be bothered but it is there for us to do, believe me .. that you can alter your page reading to other than 20 ... but when you click okay, it is NOT okay ...

I personally don't want to 'watch threads' .. I would just simply like to see what I have just posted and as and when I come back that I can see if someone has answered.

For Christ's sake, is that too much to ask of this forum? Over the years we have changed from this board to that and each one has been "BETTER AND MORE ADVANCED AND MORE ADVANTAGEOUS TO TODAY'S STANDARDS" ... is this like the washing powder I have been using for ten years that is suddenly better than they told me it was originally .. or that the toothpaste my dentist insisted I buy is now more advanced ... or that the antiperspirant I was using that I was told was the bee's knees was always cr*p and I have always been rather smelly ???? ...

I am NOT ignorant to today's technology although I profess to be .. just bear that in mind! All I can say is that thank goodness you are not teaching me at today's standards because perhaps you need a bit of 'background' from the old standards which you obviously do not have.

But, yet again, thank you for your help.

PS Now that I have gone here, there and everywhere to find my post to edit, I THINK that parameters have been changed and that you now cannot CHOOSE how many posts you want or what skin you want or ..... another up-to-date elimination of choice ..
