glad it works you, however, I have a totally different opinion

I can buy 28 days matured 'Tesco finest' rib eye steak for a 1/3rd cheaper than what the local butchers in my city sell it for

I can buy a Tesco finest organic free range chicken for cheaper than what our local butchers sell it for

I can buy a Tesco finest Welsh lamb leg from tesco, and my local butcher does not stock that

Tesco fish is a lot cheaper (and a lot fresher) than the man with a van who sits on the side of the road

the fruit and veg from Tesco is so-so ... hit and miss .... but shop clever, and buy organic and you will be ok ....

Does it taste worse than from the farmer's market? .... If you say so ...

does your local farmers market have chilean grapes when they are in season, or Spanish oranges at their best, or ripe juicy pineapples from Hawaii? ...no

at the end of the day, as much as I dislike Tesco and the other large supermarkets underpricing the small guys, I will shop where I get the best deal, the best produce and save the most

it's sad (and no, I don't work for Tesco, but I shop there daily)

I've yet to buy any fruit in Tescos that is approaching ripeness!

I don't use the farmers market in our town (as I'm at work) but I do use the market on a Saturday. All the fruit and veg is far better, and significantly cheaper!

Our local independent greengrocer gets in all the foreign fruit too. They couldn't compete if they didn't. They still manage to do so at a competitive price, and the quality is still better. I can only assume that the reason for the better quality is because unlike the supermarkets who will send one bloke to negotiate a 10 year contract and then never intervene again, the little shop has to shop around, and has to compete on both price and quality, and instead of hundreds of tonnes of oranges coming in every month, it is more like quarter a tonne per week, and the manager actually sees them and notices if they are not good.

In any case, as long as the price and quality are roughly comparable, surely it has to be better to have a chat as you shop, rather than queuing up to use an automated self service till before passing the bored stored detective on the day, on your way out.

And far more importantly, keeping your money in the local economy rather than in the plc's pockets.

Remember, a profitable independent shop is a community asset - plc profit offers nothing to the local community.

Off topic, I'm afraid, but I was just considering Jack's 4'6" Wren. Our local swimming pool once had a very well-built girl on hand to fish out anyone who appeared to be drowning. She wore a costume with the words 'Lifeguard' emblazoned across the front. Unfortunately the slogan habitually fought a losing battle with her chest, so the local lads christened her 'ifeguar'.

I use our local fruit & veg shop and butcher rather than the supermarket (where I get my groceries) as I think it is important to support your local shops even if they are a bit more expensive. Use it or lose it is the motto here.
