Well, we went to the Post Office yesterday so they must have their knickers in a twist here ... :dunno: ... or perhaps Scrungee's graph should do some genuine investigations into prices! Besides, we don't have first or second class here so we are obviously a classless society but we do have 'special delivery blue service' which any country would have. Standard delivery is 32c within the country and 68c within Europe.

You are catching up ... we were 76F today and are 60F at night .. that's in your old money ... :WINK1: xx

What would be interesting would be to replace the return address on the internal prepaid envelopes and send personal mail to preferred target addresses - i.e. sending Birthday Card to Grannie.
Would we get away with it?

Actually, our postal service from here is quite exceptional, usually two days to any European country. I have posted paintings from here on a Friday afternoon, normal post, and they have arrived in the UK on the Monday morning. For most postings from the UK to here has taken at least a week. For my largest paintings I have not paid over €10.

I sometimes send things to my Sis in Germany and she gets them in two days ... she sends to me and it takes two weeks. We cannot fault our system here be it by price or service.

For what it's worth, anyone I have sent seeds to in the UK can look at their stamps and see what I have paid for postage. :WINK1:

Its difficult to say, when you post from one country to another, where the hold up actually takes place.

Maybe Portugal takes a long time to process mail from abroad?
Or maybe it takes Britain and Germany a long time to put it on a plane?

      Who knows?

You post a letter in London, take to the post box (a few hundred yards away) someone picks it up, takes it to a local sorting office, then they put it in a big truck take it to the main depot, from there it will go by truck train, and aircraft, to another (before being picked up again by a truck) sorting office, then on to another local sorting office, (if going to The faro Islands an extreme example) will go on yet another truck, then an aircraft, or boat, then local sorting office, then in to a van, and a guy will put it through your front door, and some will also deliver, news papers and groceries to the elderly, and some you can even use there post office bus for free to travel in to town, or villages to do your shopping...... yea 60p is a lot isn't it????

What can you get for 60p nowadays? your hard pressed to get a cup of tea for that, I have seen coffee in the city for £2.50 foe a SMALL cup

If the price rises help keep our village PO open and our two regular posties in a job with decent pay we've no problems with the rise. Post mistress and posties regulary go well beyond the calls of duty (and regulations). Posties often sign for "signed for" parcels and leave them hidden with a note through the door rather than taking them back to depot with a note for us to collect (24 mile round trip). Parcels or letters too big for neighbour's letter box get left with us to deliver when they get home from work.
If anyone has complaints about time or costs, just think about the banking "service" you get and how long it takes to clear a cheque these days and where the interest goes while a cheque is in limbo.

I think the Royal Mail have shot themselves in the foot with this big increase, there is going to be a big exodus away from letters. Sending loads of Christmas cards will become a thing of the past, I'm going to use these e-card websites from now on.

For years now I have taken photographs and made my own cards and sent them as e-mails to my relatives and friends which I will continue to do in the forthcoming years.

In London, you get a bus cost£5.... no matter if its 1 stop or 10, now that's a lot of ££ the tube I think is £8 for just the 1 zone?

Go to a dealership, they charge (on average) £75 an hour just for labour

Dopey, I agree that most things become more expensive over time, I think it's called inflation, but things don't normally jump up by 30% in one go. Also most things to do with communications have been coming down over the years, at one time it cost a fortune to make phone calls especially international ones, look how cheap they are now. Same goes for the internet and mobile phones.

Try getting a package that needs a signature and you weren't home.
The paperwork says "wait 48 hours before calling the sorting office to arrange a re-delivery".
It's half a mile away, but they won't talk to you if you call in, they close at 12.00, plus they will not re-deliver to the local Post Office for collection.
I'll not detail how we get around these problems, but we know the Postie quite well now.
