potatoe help

    hello
    i have planted my first early and second early spuds
    when is the best time to plant main crop spuds ?

    Get them in as soon as your ready, no need to wait especially as both of your earlies are in now.

    I wouldn't plant until I was sure they won't catch a frost, if you have earlies in there is no need to rush the maincrop. If the maincrop get the tops frosted they will take a long time to recover, but leaving them out for a few days won't effect the end results.

    Maincrop generally take longer to get above the ground, so less chance of needing to be protected against frost than First Earlies, which are in a tearing hurry ...

    First / Second Early / Main just refers to the number of weeks between Plant and Harvest, so nothing wrong with planting them all on the same day, for example.

    In the event of Blight having a Main Crop ready to harvest a bit earlier will help "dodge" the Blight. But that's the only reason I can think of for getting them in especially early.

    Which is exactly the reason I plant all mine early, plant them deep and ridge over the top to protect against frost, harvest late july.
