Pity this is illegal in the U.K.

A bit off topic, but does anyone else here eat veal? I was converted about eighteen months ago by some rather excellent local produce that my butcher now stocks. Also makes me feel as if I'm carrying out some sort of moral duty (a bit like buying factory chickens that are heavily discounted before they go in the bin).

 

Have I missed something while reading this? Can somebody tell me please why you shouldn't feed kitchen scraps to chickens. What's wrong with them?

 

Yes I eat lots of Veal
Due to lots of Italian connections and holidays
Veal is one of the main Italian meats sold
Delicious tender, and easy to cook

In Germany most of the Schnitzels are Veal.
Look up the sauces they use for variety. They are excellent

 

It's so they don't catch mad cow disease because they are already so crazy it would be really serious indeed. Or something like that.

 

I do know someone that has actually given their chooks leftover chicken casserole...
How can you let them eat their mates.....

 

Thats simliar to how BSE happened, farmers feeding sheeps brains to mainly vegetarian cows (I have seen a cow eat a chicken) Scrapey, a disease sheep put up with, became bse when introduced to moo moos.

 

When you look back at what was put into animal feeds years ago, it was not nice, some one's waste is some one esle's proifit, were there's muck there's money,
The worst bit about it all is that what you feed your animals, if you eat that animal you will be eating what they have eaten

 

I recycle the kitchen waste minus meat to the chucks they love their porridge!
Years ago does anyone remember the trucks going around collecting waste food from schools and canteens,this was then all cooked up for pig swill.Pork not only tasted better but what a good way to recycle!Of course this was the days before so much processed food was used to feed us humans just google mechanically recovered meat it is this sort of thing that should be banned IMHO kids are being bought up eating this mush.

The Danes feed pigs on Sandeels taken from the North Sea, then they wonder why fish stocks are declining. Funny that, take food from the bottom of the chain & then wondering why the top is collapsing.

 

Thats as bad as shooting wild boar and leaving them to rot,we are supposed to be the superior beings but I sometimes think mankind rates below goldfish for intelligence.

During war time, people were positively encouraged to keep chickens and feed them kitchen scraps and we all keep hearing how that generation were the healthiest.

I do understand it on a commercial level, but it makes no sense on a domestic level; besides it would be impossible to police and enforce.

My neighbour very thoughtfully gives my girls any "leftovers" from his veg box delivery business.

I give my girls anything that needs using up rather than thrown out; the compost bin gets the rest. Then, I recycle their poos in my compost too. I also bake the egg shells, crush them and feed those back to the chooks too. What would be the alternative? (drumroll as Miss Cynic enters the room)
We buy chicken feed
We buy oyster shell
Amazing just how many "directives" require us to feed into yet more capitilism

 

my girls have leftovers, always have done. even well cooked meat (but not other birds, obviously!). They like a mouse on occasion, when the cats kill one & decide not to eat it. when my kids catch cabbage white butterflies I feed them to my girls, too. They'll eat pretty much what wanders into their run anyway. I feed them slugs and snails. It's funny at this time of year to see them darting about their run after flies

I think that's why their eggs taste better than the shops best organic eggs. most countries in the EU dont bother complying, so why should we? damn politicians up the EU's posterior, telling us we can't have bendy bananas and such like!

My hubby manages a farm for a large Pig Breeding firm & for several years now it's been more about the paperwork than the pigs! I know some of that is because of disease precaution, but mainly its the bleedin EU interfearing!

Incidentally, someone said about live animal exports should be banned? I agree if the animal is to be slaughtered when it arrives at its destination, but my hubby has pigs that are exported to Greece, Italy etc for breeding, so it's not all doom & gloom.
