Waxed rhizoma

I bough a cassava root to grow , but I just notice that all the root is covered in wax , I think to stop it shooting roots.
Any idea of how can i remove the wax?

 

You could try soaking it in warm water for a while. If that doesn't work you could try seeing if it sprouts anyway, as the shoots will come from the top and there will be enough power stored in the root to get it going. By which time the wax may have begun to break down naturally.
Let us know how you get on because I fancy trying cassava.

 

I`m scared to damage the root , but I will have a go...I`ve never grown one but so far I`ve learned that there are different variety as well and many are just ornamental.
I bough an indian cassava , but the guy was telling me that caribbean or african are different and taste different as well .

 

My guess, the wax would be to stop the tuber dehydrating.
But the wax will stop it taking up water also.
Presumably you peel them before eating, but the wax must be harmless.

Try washing it off with hand hot water.

 

tryed to wash that off it`s really tough , I will try to sock in hot water and I was thinking of little incisions on the root .

 

Will it scrape off?

 

Cool iron over a layer of blotting paper?

 

just find a better option , go to the local market saturday and buy few new one , the one in the market looked unwaxed and different from the one I got.
they only way to scrape that off is to peel the root , I`ll may will peel it and fry it : )

 

been to the market , went to the caribbean stall , 2 different type of cassava , asked for an unwaxed cassava , he laugh at me and told that if I want an unwaxed cassava i need to go to the caribbean .........If it wouldn`t be for the wax they would never reach uk , as apparently they rotting really quick .
need a plan .

 

I went in Morrisons this morning, they had all kinds of roots and the waxed cassava.
I bought a couple of edoes, god knows why, I dont have the space.

Sal, wrap it in some newspaper and put it on a radiator for a bit. Maybe that will soften it enough to come off more easily.

 

it`s not a soft wax , it look like candle wax really hard , I will try tmw with hot water ....I really would love to grow one , just to try how they perform in UK , it maybe will be a big failure or a great discovery , been searching all over internet but nothing.
