    Feeling it again.

Hosta's. I like them but are always munched in the damper area where they thrive. I need the room for something with nicer flowers, so i want to dig up two and dispose BUT i feel guilty !!

    Driving me nuts :wallbanging:

Why not give a few heuchera's or columbines a go in place of the hosta's.

Got loads of Aquilegia, i love them.
Never had much success with Heuchara, they seem to bolt and go woody at the base

i don't know why my hostas are never being muched despite the damp location, not that I mind... instead i have to protect my delphiniums, which grow not far away
maybe i have some particularly evil tasting hostas?

    Mr grinch,
would your place be ok for primula candelabra varieties? they like it damp and shady and FLOWER, good supplier website is Kevock garden, but I don't know how good their plants and services are, have only ordered 2 days ago

    Mr. G.
I agree with you on Aquiligia. I also have quite a few and they sef seed prolifically.
For Hosta's in shady areas - would you use the Blue Slug Pellets. Thats all that really works on Slugs

      Mr Grinch,
If you love Aquilegias you really want to come and visit our garden when we open it at the end of May. Apart from having thousands of them in the garden we also have lots for sale - for our charity - sold over 50 of them in the first hour. :dbgrtmb:

We can't be all that far from you :)

I did have a couple of these a few years ago, i love them yes but the season of interest seemed very short. I will have a look anyway, see what i can find. I'll google Kevock's site.

        regards
        G

          Damper area = slugs'n snails!!

Please don't replace them with Heuchera (:gaah::gaah:) - if you do that you should feel guilty!!

          Is it damp because it's in the shade? If so, here are a few ideas;
          Aconitum..........
A."Stainess Steel" flowers earlier in the summer
          [IMG]

Aconitum "Sparks Variety" later in the season (for me)

          Ligularia "The Rocket"

Tricyrtis (although slimey things are quite partial to these too!)

Hostas can be very rewarding and need little attention.

              Granted they do look great.
I have three in the garden at the moment and one in a pot. I have found that even with slug control, they look great for a short amount of time before the leaves start to look ragged. The one in the pot looks better for longer.
