Hi, I have just been up to the car boot sale and saw some brussel sprout plants for sale that were 200mm tall with about 8 leaves. To my way of thinking this is way to early for these plants.
    Would like another opinion please

It is early, but probably doesn't matter - they need a long growing season. However ...

    1) I never buy Brassica plants - I don't want someone else's Clubroot here :(
    2) Large plants, i.e. sown early, will mature early, and personally I don't want Brussels Sprouts in the Autumn, I see it as a Winter veg. Just my personal preference though, of course.

I agree with both of Kristens points and I always grow my own brassicas, it's no good introducing someones elses problems into your garden.

I'm sowing my sprouts and broccolis today, and the first sowing of caulis/cabbages too.

      Steve...:)

I'm thinking of growing a few brussels this year, first time since clubroot struck about 15yrs ago.
Might sow the seed next month, sorry, this month.April.

Trouble with Clubroot (as I'm sure you know Pete) is that so many weeds are in the Brasscia family it persists :( but club root resistant varieties now, and I hear that growing them on to 4" or 5" pots and then planting out works well (along with the old stalwarts of a handful of lime in the planting holes etc)

The reason I',m giving them a go again is the giant Jersey cabbages grew OK last year with no sign of club root.

Surely you didn't miss this competition Freddy? Pigeons are starting to roost in mine at the moment:
