Not that many really as half of them are for my daughter to sell for fund raising.

I cheated and bought a couple of young plants from the nursery. Has anyone grown 'Black Cherry' and if so, how was it for you? This year I've mostly returned to my old favourite 'Gardener's Delight'. It always seems to do pretty well and it tastes good.

Claire; I've grown Black Cherry and can really recommend it for taste. I'm growing it again this year along with several Gardener's Delight which I think are great for sweetness, taste and vigour.

It's a easy route to take if you only want a few plants and cheaper too. I saw them yesterday in Wyevale, there was quite a good selection of varieties and the plants looked as good as mine that are grown under grow lamps and were less than £1 each.

I have to admit to buying 4 F1 all female cucumber plants for 50p each yesterday, it's much cheaper than buying a packet of seeds. It's the first time in years I've not grown them from seed, but these were a bargain.

            A +1 for gardeners delight!:blue thumb:
I think my toms are getting travel sick now back and forth to the green house this last week. The only ones suffering are the Mortgage Lifter the shot up very spindly right at the start of this cold blast and I didnt take them out Monday - Wednesday.
All will come right in the end with a bit of creative planting.
I do find the shelf over the top of my sky box is an ideal propagater the heat them things kick out is brutal:snork:

              Hiya chums.

I sowed mine a couple of weeks ago, in the propagator. Sungold, Rosada and some old Ildi seed that have been hanging around for a couple of years. The Sungold and Rosada have been up for a week or so, and will be potted up into smallish pots. No sign yet of the Ildi, but I'm not surprised, they have an expiry date of 2009:redface: Anyway, in the next week or so, I'll be sowing toms destined for outdoors. These include Ferline, Super Marmande and Legend. Last year I made the mistake of sowing the outdoor ones too early, and as a result the plants suffered. Although I thought I was doing the right thing by planting them out in early June, it was still very cold at night (as you may recall) which set them back. By sowing a bit later, my thinking is that I can leave planting out until mid June. We'll see...:)

                  Thanks, John, that sounds promising.

My plants were a quid each and it saved me the hassle of trying to raise them in less than ideal conditions. I think it's fine if, like me, you just want a few plants to grow in a small town garden.

                    Hiya Clare.

I think you're right. For the number of plants I grow (maybe 20 or so) it would probably make sense to just buy them. The cost of F1 seed, the cost of heating, it's probably costing me more this way. But it's something that I get enjoyment out of, 'priceless'

Good idea!, I've just sown six more seeds - that makes it much easier to remember.

                      toms2012.png

I discovered an interesting fact about Sungold toms a while ago - that they have a distinct 'Sungold' smell so you can check if anyone selling them at boot sales, etc. has used proper F1 seeds rather than F2 saved seeds which will produce lots of red (as well as golden) fruits (still very sweet & tasty though). So have a sniff next time you're in the greenhouse (if I posted this 5 days ago I'm sure it would have been thought a joke).

I'm growing Sungold F1 this year and out of curiosity I am trying Rheinhard Kraft's Sungold Select II which is an OP version of Sungold.
It apparently has a similar - but less sweet taste - which some people prefer.
                        We shall see...
