Willow is right in the middle of her GCSE's if they strike now, they're gonna have a very angry father to deal with.

I can't stockpile knowledge as, nowadays, it all falls of the top!

Ziggy, I heard a union official say they won't strike until after the summer

The thing that bothers me most about this thread is that ziggy reads the Guardian :yikes: :hate-shocked:

They can't strike before the Summer Holidays.
If they're on strike when Schools break up, they won't get paid for 6 weeks, with no chance of settlement for that period - 'cos they're all abroad.
Oh - and they "can't" strike before the Summer because it would effect Student education as well:scratch::scratch::scratch:

Anyone notice the new trend, the tanker drivers are threatening to strike not just about wages but the "safety training" the teachers are threatening to strike not just about wages but because of concerns about academies.
Being a bit pessimistic and also working in the building trade for the last 40yrs self employed makes me think especially with the teachers how would they get on in the real world,if you are not working you are not earning.
As for the tanker drivers £46,000 a year well I have earn't more than that some years but some years have been thankful for £5,000.
It must be great to be able to afford to have principles!

Teachers? Strike? Would we actually notice?

OK, OK, so I'm old - but when I was at school the academic year consisted of just 3 terms: half-term was Friday and the following Monday: Easter began the day before Maundy Thursday and we were back at our desks two days after East Monday: Christmas was usually about a week and a half and there was none of this closing the school because of ½" of snow nonsense. The rest of the time we started at 8.30am and finished at 4pm, learned 'by rote', had weekly spelling tests, lost marks for poor grammar and handwriting and had at least 2 hrs homework - but we all left able to read, write, spell and (even now) can tell you instantly the answer to 7 x 8.

Now some (but only some) of the schools round here have a 5 term year, with a 2 week gap between each and a shorter summer break, making life and holiday planning doubly difficult for working parents with children at different schools. In those schools still operating a 3 term year, half-term is a week, Easter and Christmas at least 2 each. They seem to wander in around 9am, by 3.15pm their day is over and they've already walked the half-mile from the school into the village, meaning they must have finished quite by 3. Whilst iPads and smart-phones are everywhere, bags and books are conspicuous by their absence; 'elf n safety means the school shuts the minute there's a bit of snow and stays shut for a week and of course there's the 'Inset' days. They can barely string a coherent sentence together, use the calculator on their phones to work out what 4 of 'them ones is' if they're 15p each and think they've done well if they get a GCSE Grade D in FoodTech, RM or Inglish.

It comes to something when we live in a country where a tanker driver's strike can bring it to a grinding halt within a week and yet 'full time' teaching still leaves our youngsters trailing well behind those in the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia. :noidea:

There is a lot to be said for learning by rote. I've said before, I missed years of school due to illness so most of what I know is self taught.

When it came to learning french, I learned to count from 1 to 100 by writing it down (alphabetically, before some wag jumps in:snork:) over and over till it stuck.

It took a whole evening but I can still count in french.

During the course of my employment we ask certain security questions one of which is how old is your youngest child in years and MONTHS
                    Err she is 12
Yes and how many months please
Well she was born in January
Yes so how old is she in Years and MONTHS please
                    Err is it ten
This is mainly single mothers under the age of 30

I think I got a clue today when one told me she did not have a calculator

Even worse are the MALES under 30
"Can you speak to my Mum"
Well yes once I have your identity
                    Err waas thaaat fuur
                    etc etc

Eventually get to prove who he is and permission to speak to mummy
Hello, it is Brians mum here
You have sent him a bill for £3175, it is very unfair that you kept paying him every week for a year, just because he forgot to tell you he had stopped work a year ago,
So can you just cancel it please
Well the clue is in WORKING TAX CREDIT you need to be working to claim it

Yes but Brian, goes out a lot and he needed this money, Do you not understand that ?
So if you really would just cancel it please

I am sorry but he has taken Government funds he was not entitled to and he must pay it back

SOB SOB cry cry,BUT but cry cry "Give me the F in phone I will tell him mum"
and it goes on until CLUNK

Actually it is a lot harder and dirtier than that from their end

Then one second later without a break you get the next one

None stop two hours on 15 min break to the SECOND, two hours on one hour lunch to the SECOND, two hours on 15 min break to the SECOND, two hours on HOME

THREE DAYS TO GO Weeeeeeeee :dancy:

                    Jack McH

:) I remember the staff at the child support agency saying that they always had to open letter and packages very carefully, because they never knew what might be in them. Are you having a party, Jack?
