Anyone still use Macrame plant pot holders? I was looking for something to replace the horrible plastic hanging pot one of my recent house plant acquisitions came in and thought I'd make one for a clay pot when I scrape some cash together for some cord:smile: I was going to buy some already made up but I couldn't believe how much some people were charging for such a simple designs (I'm not paying £10 for some tied up rope:whistle:)

for anyone wondering what a Macrame pot holder is here's a picture (probably a lot more fancy than the one I will make :snork:)

I thought about making some myself, but I haven't got round to it. I know there are books available to make the different designs. One day maybe.

I have several A ... brought from the IoW ... lovely ones with green glass beads. Think I only paid a couple of quid, perhaps at Oasis ? (love that shop) or was it at Superbuys in Newport? Currently I have my Hoya Bella in my green glass bead one ... don't think I have a photo but will have a lookie ...

Whoops, found the piccie but you can't see the hanging do-dah ...

I make my own have done for years, even sent some out to a friend in Canada. I buy little coloured beads to string on mine. Only takes about and hour to hour an a half to make a small one to hold a 3½ inch pot.

I haven't watched the video but I use the common macrame processes giving either a flat or a twisted finish whichever is prefered. Usually using four strands of whatever material i.e. cotton, cord, string or nylon. You can use all sorts of medium to make them from. I even make macrame dog leads and belts.:)

Yes a white macrame holder with a spider plant was very chic in the sixties ! I still think they look great .
Aesculus , you will need to grow your hair and a Sergeant Peppers moustache - get an Afghan coat as well , and just keep saying "oh yeah man " :snork:

We were married in the late 1970's and, knowing I was 'into' crafty things, for our first wedding anniversary my husband bought me some very nice handicraft books. For a while there our house was adorned with huge tissue paper flowers, candles with pressed flowers stuck all over them, potpourri in various stages of preparation and then .... I decided to have a go at the macramé projects!

They hadn't even thought of Hobbycraft in those days and if they had done I wouldn't have been able to afford the 'proper' cord, so I settled for using common or garden string. Of course, I should have started with something simple (as per the video) but no, I went straight for the most complicated pot holder I could find purely because I liked the design! The first step was to cut about 16 pieces of cord/string each 10 yards long .. simple; then came some crown knots, again not too taxing and these in turn were followed by square knots. Everything was going fine until it came to the 'half knot twists' - by which time everything was knotted and twisted not helped by the fact that the cheap string I'd bought was unravelling at one end quicker than I could knot and twist it together at the other! My husband helped me untangle the mess, provided elastic bands and pegs to keep the loose ends tidy, strips of coloured paper and bits of sellotape to identify which bit went where and even found somewhere to screw a cup-hook so I could hook the work over it and keep it taut!

I can't remember how long this thing took - I may have blacked out from sheer frustration several times or just gone into a trance, but eventually I finished it and if not perfect, well at least it bore a passing resemblance to the picture in the book. My spider plant looked very handsome in it's 'posh' hanger but, needless to say .... we only ever had the one! :loll:

Lol Fidget's mum. I used to get in such tangles when I first started out but I use the handle on my bedroom door which is only a couple of yards away from my desk here so perfect length to work on. I haven't had time to make any this year but I still have a few hanging around from other years. I use garden string, the white sort not hairy but tight. The larger cord ones then I have wooden beads to use on and the small brightly coloured beads I keep for the garden string. :)

I would but I am having trouble uploading pictures to the site at the moment. I will try and find a picture I have somewhere with some of them hanging with plants in and see if I can upload it but it will probably be like the fiasco I have been having on the tobacco thread trying to upload there. But never say die I will have a go. Be back soon.
