Hi guys, Wondering if i could get some advice on my first post here :)

I have an Column Apple tree which is around 10 years old, I also brought a Small cherry tree last summer which is now around 6ft tall and looks really good.

Last year however the apple tree got smothered in a white sticky covering which looked like bloody when you squeezed it so i guessed it was some kind of bug, by the end of the year it would have killed the branch that it was dominating .

Anyway i guess that i need to use some kind of spray to prevent this ? What spray should i be using , how do i use it etc ?

Ive very much an amateur in the garden but i like to keep everything pruned well and tidy, ive also had some good success with a herb and veg garden last year which im continuing.

Any advice about the spray, when to do it and what brands are best etc would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

    Adam

Sounds like Oyster scale (American something or other it is often called). It is an insect and the white is a wax covering to keep it dry. So no sprays are going to get through the wax. If there is not much of it then brush the tree with Methylated spirits, this melts the wax and the insect dies of dehydration. Otherwise anything based on horticultural soap will work if brushed on rather than sprayed.

Sorry cannot really help, we do not spray our trees with anything, except a Horticultural soap in December.

      this might work?
      http://www.aquaculture-hydroponics....prays-and-root-tonics/canna-cure-750ml-1.html

      snip:
When sprayed directly onto pests, Cannacure forms a layer over the pests' body and suffocates it

I have never tried it though
