I wondered if any one has been growing radishes sucessfully? I've wanted to grow them for the past few years but they go thin and 'wild' All I was aiming for was some rads about the size of two pence pieces (container growing) My wife likes them and now even I have a taste for them. Happy sunny sunday, Mike.

I've actually got some planted now, first time grower, so all trial and error.

Apparently they can take about 30 days 'til harvest

Blooming incredible video Kyle , that was amazing ! I am growing radish for the first time this year trying "Candela di Fuoco" an Italian radish . Do the radish leaves die back as the video when they are ready to harvest ?
Sorry for jumping in Mike I am sure a radish guru will be along to give us a few pointers :blue thumb:

no,its ok, and good to see the video, thanks.
I've put some seeds in a saucer with water and tissue to see if they will germinate. I did this last year with some peas that had trouble getting going last year. I think I've been too keen to say they've failed in the past, cheers, M

          Hiya chums.

I've grown radishes for the last couple of years, and had no problems at all. They are quick to mature, in fact, TOO quick:) I can't say I've noticed the leaves dying back as shown in the video  I haven't tried them in containers, so I can't offer any advice on that front. No way you can sow them direct into the ground?

          Cheers...Freddy.

Just had a look at mine Mike , after 10 days about 80% have germinated , in fact looks like I have over sown my container , so I will thin out in a week or so. They are just sown 10mm deep in standard MPC . Do you know what variety you are sowing ? Reading up on t'internet says they are a pretty trouble free veg to grow.
Next question for me is , how do you know when they are ready to pick

From the video, it appears to grow quite large and then has a red stem, which might be when they're ready to pick? Not sure what my variety are, but mine are outside so probably going to take forever with this cold weather (planted them when it was warm)

No, I dont know the type, they are rad's from a free packet, but I didnt keep the pack. But good news , my rads and beet and a few other seeds have all germinated in saucers of water and are now in small pots in the warm (porch area) So they will go outside later in the month, they may go to stringy indoors. I grew two types last year, Scarlet globe and French Breakfast, they will grow easily in tubs

but can be prone to drying out, and tend to compete more for light, making less radish and more leaf.

French Breakfast, more unusual looking, but are good cut length ways for dips (bit like carrot sticks) this is as big as I let them get or they start going woody. (last year pot grown)

Scarlet Globe, more traditional and for me has the better flavour of the two (last year grown in an old tyre lolz)

This year I've not put any in tubs, I simply fit a small row in the veg patch here and there, where I see more room, they seem to be liking that, I collected my own seed from the scarlet globe last year, so have plenty, I sow thick (about 3 seed per inch in a V drill) and then thin them as needed, this is this years from thining at the weekend) these little radish are fantastic whole in coleslaw.....

Thanks for that update PP , your scarlet globes are as big as an apple ! :blue thumb: I am growing mine in containers , Candela del Fueco and Sparklers - I dont know them just picked them off Ebay because they looked good  . Just one question - as usual - how do you determine when to pick them , before they get ,as you say , woody

They gow huge when you let them go to seed, I let my last six or so plants flower and ended up with a window sill of radish seed pods to play with....

A fiddley thing to get the seed out of coz....well try it n you'll see what I mean lol, anyway I got more seed than I can eat in 2012, about 20 or more packets worth...

as for knowing when they are ready? pull one out:WINK1: the seedling leaves taste great (the adult are ok small but fast get prickley as they get bigger), baby radish taste great, at the mo they are taking about 8 weeks from seed to plate, in the height of the summer 3 to 4 weeks, so dont plants tons at once, 20/30 seed every two weeks is enough, and you will have an ample supply, and if you let the last go to seed you'll never buy a radish again.

                    Plant Potty.

Edit. double posted same photo, hope this works :)

If you do let them go to seed, the pods are delicious! Crunchy and fresh with a radishy flavour - great with cold beer.

When I was collecting the pods last year Ziggy posted that you can eat them, I think he was saying "good in a stur fry"

However, at the end of this session I'll be trying your take on how best to eat them, with a beer:blue thumb:
