    :hapydancsmil:

i've started on my planting finally, a long way to go though :frown:
it amazes me how much you think you've bought, but when its planted, it looks sparse. :gaah:

made the mistake of going to the Grovesnor garden centre, good range but it ain't cheap :yikes: decided to have some lunch there too :yikes: :yikes:. was also tempted by some solar lighting, and i did give way to temptation! :snork:

all in all, a very nice day, but to fill just that one corner is going to cost a small fortune. will be worth it in the long run though. :blue thumb:

major downside though, i've broken my fave pot.   i lost an acer that was planted inside it, so as i went to pull it out, the planter toppled over on the railway sleeper and smashed :cry3:

You're right, al, Grovesnor Nursery ain't cheap!! Filling a border does take time and a lot of plants, but you will get there!! I'm not sure what sort of plants you like, but I'm sure you'll know what to put in the border. The lowest price I saw fence panels was £14 for 6' x 4' panels, against B@Q around £18 - £20. If you are in the market for panels have a look in your local Timber Merchant.

the new neighbour is going halves with the fence panels both here and the front drive/garden so that'll work out cheaper.

as for plants, i'm one of those that like everything!! love structure, love colour, but my wallet doesn't :heehee: would you believe that little lot above cost me best part of £150???!!!! :yikes: i would have got more, but the car was full!!!!! :heehee:

i'm aiming to buy a few bits each week as to get it up to how i want it asap, it'll still take a while though......................

One of the answers is DON'T go to Grovesnors again.:nonofinger::heehee: There are some good Market Plant Sellers, with good stock, selling at good prices. But even they, if you go too mad, will break the bank. This might just might start getting you thinking about cuttings and propagating!!!!:snork:

                very nice!

you may need to protect that palm in winter though

or, replace it with a Trachycarpus wagnerianus and use the existing palm in a large pot, then move it indoors during winter

I've bought a few Trachycarpus wagnerianus from this online site:
                  http://www.thepalmhouse.co.uk/t_wagnerianus.html

good prices and very healthy palms .... delivery was superb, as I was even notified what time the driver would deliver

I also bought a T-Rex from the same seller:
                  http://www.thepalmhouse.co.uk/TRex.html

some guys on another forum have been buying from here:
                  http://www.hardy-palms.co.uk/category.asp?section=16

and they seem very happy .... so shop around and you will most likely get better deals off the internet than from a garden centre

Don't rule out bulbs and tubers as a cheap way of filling it out for all seasons.

                    A few ideas.............

Well, with regard to Palms I think al would find it cheaper to keep an eye on Aldi, Lidl's and Wilkinsons as they usually sell them at an affordable price.

I agree with dim regarding bringing Palms into the house, if you can, to shelter them during the Winter. I've got 4 in large pots and I wouldn't take the chance of losing them in a bad Winter:gaah: , which is why I have a six month Jungle Kitchen:snork:

giving you few tips as well .......
try local market , check price from different garden center , January sale is a best time to buy big plants , try place like homebase where they never water plants and will sell then for pences , like longk suggest don`t forget the bulbs as from may you can get them on sale (wilkinson already have half price on summer bulbs)...and for cheap tropical try your asian crocery.
those are eddoes available even from tesco
