They can take a while. Bottom heat will help. Chilli's vary hugely by variety (what variety are you growing?). I have some that are slow to germinate and make minuscule plants that take ages to get established ... and others that bulk up much more quickly.

Mine took between 10 days and nearly 4 weeks, with the majority taking about 2 weeks, and that was in my shiny new heated propagator.

:blue thumb:Thats a good concise site Pamsdish thanks.
Hello NK , you may be a little late starting Chillis in late April . Most of the numerous Chilli sites tell you to start them late January - February.
I soak my seeds in tepid water for 24 hours then surface sow on seed compost and stick them in the airing cupboard at 30°c . I find mine germinate in 8 to 20 days with about 60% germinating. As Kristen said it does depend on which of the 2500 varieties it is ! I find them good fun to grow , they are a good looking plant , and watching the chillis form on the plant is fascinating :dbgrtmb:

Indeed, good advice. Getting a plant from G.Centre saves anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks of "growing time", or more (I expect my local Shed will be selling Tomatoes bearing fruit shortly ...)

yeah but ya dont get the satisfaction from growing your own , i probably will get 1 or 2 from a gc tho and will learn from my mistakes this year , how many chillis do you get on average from 1 plant?

You've still got to grow them :blue thumb: its just covering for the fact that you are starting a bit late (same deal whether not starting early enough, or sowing seeds and then them failing). Although if you sow seeds you will get the variety that you want, which the G.Centre probably won't be selling ...

So no need to feel bad :)

I started some NuMex Suauve chillis last week, since Im not having much luck getting anything past the 4 leaves & sulking point at the moment (Too cold... no sun.. stupid weather) so theres still time if we start to get some sun.

Just in case Im going to see if I can get things going with my home made LED growlight:

but it needs a bit more work to keep the heat down (theres 8 3w LEDs on that lump of copper heatsink, but its getting too hot after an hour or so, so Im going to rejig it & split 12 LEDs over four heatsinks - hopefully that will cool passively, or with the help of a single fan to move the air about).

Well done with the LED grow light Nick :dbgrtmb: It will look like an 80's disco when you get it up and running :snork:
NK the GC's are selling Chili plants now for about £1.10 each , or you can get a pack of 6 dead ones from B and Q as they have put them outside ! My chillis are flowering now and the fruit should be pickable say in 6 weeks . They will fruit outside until October so you do get quite a few from each plant - how many I don't have a clue . Remember they are a tropical plant and need HEAT and LIGHT . Mine only go outside late June.
