Yup, i'm growing them for exactly that reason. I've always been a fan of hot chilli and having found that there's no sauce on the market I consider "hot"* thought I'd make my own, hence the need for the raw materials.

    *High street/supermarket.

Just noticed the first chillies starting to form!

Perhaps it's time to start giving them some of my bargain chilli fertiliser?

What a bargain - just because some condensation dripping from the garden centre roof had caused some of the boxes to stick together. Wonder what it'll do for the Peter Peppers?

I've been picking chillies all winter but the plants are looking a bit sorry for themselves now. I've had them in the, unheated, greenhouse in the propagator but not covered.

Super blerry hot!!! No, sorry, I can't remember. It's the last surviving one of our five year old plants. I find them even hotter than the Naga chillies. :hate-shocked:

The most important way of getting the bargains, is after reading Scrungee's posts
you become aware that these things actually exist, so can look for them

Previously I did not know there were bargains to be had, so just paid up what was on the label

One shed I visit, I met an old gardener, who visits the place twice a week for years,
Whilst chatting the younger sales lady (35ish) chats too as he was well known to them
            consequently she now knows me,
We exchange good mornings and weather small talk, several times when I have gone to buy stuff, it is Jack I would pop in on Tuesday to buy that
Voila Tuesday the store had had its stock re arranged and the bargain table has err what I was going to buy on the Saturday amongst other stuff (I must point out not specifically laid aside for I, but was due to be reduced then)

Though I must say the store is not as generous with its mark downs as Scrungee's finds are

            Thanks Scrungee

That's exactly how my Cayenne peppers look right now. They've stopped growing upwards and have started making loads of sideshoots. Last time I potted them up I put three to a pot to get something bushier and it was immediately after that they started making those sideshoots.

A question for chilli seed savers - I've got about 8 non F1 varities of Chilli - will seeds from open pollination come true, or do I need to either segregate plants for saving or hand pollinate/bag the flowers?

Although the experts say that you need to segregate them, we never do and they always appear to come true. Of course, they could be gradually changing and we haven't noticed. Also, most of our varieties are either tiny (the chilli not the plant) extremely hot ones or medium sized very hot ones. So, any resultant cross should still be hot.

Not much help, I'm afraid

Kyle, when the flower opens it is a good idea to pollinate them with a cotton bud or small paint brush. Just lightly brush inside each flower . When it is warm enough and the plants go outside , into a sheltered sunny spot , the insects do this task for us - for free :blue thumb: After a couple of days the flower will shrivel and the chilli will form , takes around 6 weeks for them to ripen.

Thanks for the tip, Harry, I would have just left it to do it's own thing :snork: got two flowers on two different plants now, so I'll give it a go later

I'm having a bash at growing chilli plants as part of my first year growing edible crops, and could do with any advice/tips please - I have sown them into 6 litre pots, with four plants per pot, and so far they seem quite happy - is it OK to leave them as they are? I've fed them with fish, blood and bone for now and though that tomato food would be best once they get really going?

Here they are when they were just started:

And here they are a couple of days ago:

I used a lamp on mine for about a month, some days I left it beaming down on them for about 8 hours at a time.
