I think that micro-organisms and stuff like that tend to be quite tough and have the ability too evolve much faster than larger organisms - kinda like MRSA. Plus worste case scenario you can actually buy benefial soil bacteria and enymes from the same store you buy your chemical fertiliser from so its not like if you do kill them, its the end of the world plus they will eventually come back given time.
I often use chemical fertilers and my soil is full of worms all the time they dont seem to mind that much.
Id like to be all organic too but i just cant see how its practical all the time, plus its not without its downsides - foot in mouth for example and stuff like that

I think its best if we don't fill the land with chemicals, but seeing as do, its worth pointing out that there is a process called Bioremediation, which demonstrates that its not all doom and gloom for the soil organisms.

This rubbish about there being too many mouths to feed without chemical ferts is a sick joke played on us by big agriculture/big oil. I suppose you all believe we need GM crops to feed us too?
If we wanted to we could feed the planet many times over with organic grown foods, the fact is 1/4 of the planet doesn't get enough food to live on and it has nothing to do with how the food was grown and everything to do with greedy corporations.

This is exactly my point that I made earlier about info not being objective. When you open with 'This rubbish about...', it is immediately clear that what follows is based on strong feelings and is likely to be biased. In fact all of this post has a very emotive tone to it, which to be honest for me at least renders it pointless, as if we strip it down to objective fact, there appears to be no info in there at all.

EDIT: For what its worth, I agree with you entirely on your point about the world being more than capable of producing enough food for everyone. I disagree on the point about that being the fault of greedy corporations though. In the developed world it is entirely the fault of the consumer, us. We simply throw away probably half of our food, quite probably much more than that.

You are not reading what is being said here. Your claim that we could feed the world many times over is tosh, organic grown crops yield much less than inorganic, thats the main reason why organic food is so much more expensive.

There are different ways to solve this problem as well as reducing the population, for instance everyone could be fed if all the area used to grow tobacco was used for food crops but somehow I can't ever see that happening.

I'm stunned. I hadn't even thought about that. I guess the same goes for the illegal drugs like cocaine and opium too. When you think about it like that, its no wonder there are practically wars over such things.

this is the way forward .... indoor growing ... no soil ... organic nutrients/fertilizers .... grow under lights and you speed up the growing cycle ....

I have even seen a recent documentary on tv, where a home produced all their veg this way, and they also bred tilapa fish in the same room:

In Japan, some farmers have adopted the Kyusei Nature farming technique

100% organic, and adopts the technique of using effective microorganisms (i.e. you feed the soil, and not the plants)

In tests, higher yields were obtained, there was less plant disease and hardly any weeds:
              http://www.infrc.or.jp/english/KNF_Data_Base_Web/PDF KNF Conf Data/C1-3-003.pdf

If you are growing your own veg, it makes no sense (to me) to not grow organically .... there are loads of organic fertilizers and pesticides that do the exact same job as synthetic fertilizers, and they cost the same or even cheaper ....

what puts people off though is that garden centres do not stock these organic fertilizers, and they have to be bought online or from hydroponic stores

The reason there isn't enough food to go round is politics and distribution, at the height of the Etheopian famine food and other plant products were being exported from Etheopia because a) they didn't have an effective distribution network and b) there wasn't the political will - the country's leaders wanted the money that exports would bring.

Here we waste food (and I'm as guilty as the next one) but mostly it isn't the individuals who waste it's at source or again at distribution point and the reason for that is we believe we have the choice to eat what we want when we want, which is also the reason for artificial growing methods.

My old apple tree hasn't seen a chemical for the 31 years I've lived in my house, it produces lovely apples every year but if i don't want to eat all of them I can rarely give them away because people like to go shopping and select whatever fruit happens to take their fancy that day.

lol, I just get passionate about the things i believe in and i've done the research on organic growing and side by side plant tests, it's definitely better produce but more importantly i know that companies like monsanto are killing the planet with roundup and their terminator gene.

So i get frustrated when people say we need chemical fertilisers and pesticides to make enough food to feed the planet, because that goes into way deeper concepts than this.

Yeah sure there are problems with organic growing but compared to the alternative it's a no brainer to me.

I agree that hydroponics is the way forward but i dont believe that a hydroponic garden using organic fertiliser could produce the same results as one using a chemical feed specifically for that crop.

name one such specific synthetic chemical feed and I will show you an organic fertilizer that is the same or better ..... and that costs the same or cheaper

I'm convinced the world population cannot be fed by organic means alone.
Many of the African countries live the very basic lifestyle and are growing by age old methods, they often find themselves with more people than the land can support, its called famine.
We dont get famine because we grow artificially. So a smaller amount of land can support an unnaturally sized population.

We do waste food these days, but just think, if we didn't buy so much, what would happen, lost jobs in the food industry/farming etc.

And anyway, why should I have to eat every last little bit of stale bread before I'm allowed to buy another loaf.

Its a very easy cop out to blame big companies, true they are there to make money.
But just by living on this planet you become part of it, like it or not.

Those companies might well have your pension money wrapped up in them.:gaah:

the only famine in Africa is in places such as Ethiopia where they have prolonged droughts ...

other parts such as Zimbabwe are starving because they confiscated the farms that belonged to white farmers, and they now don't know how .... and they don't have the inclination to grow food ... at one stage, they were the breadbasket of Africa .... the soil is fertilile and they get enough rain

as for companies such as Montsanto, they are driven by greed and profits, and don't really give a damn about the wellbeing of people or communities
