    Hiya Scrunge.

    I have done this in the past, when I grew my toms in Growbags. Apart from anything else, it made watering a lot easier I found. BTW, I got mine for nothing, at Asda:)

      Good idea, I've got loads of 2L - 4L pots, the would be better around a Tom than no-ring-culture. Every time I look at those "ring culture" pots I drool at the prospect and then faint at the price ...

      or 37p and a few minutes work with a Stanley knife on some Morrisons ex-flower buckets.

      These ring culture pots seem a bit more complicated (and costly @ £12.95 for 3) - how do they work? I suspect they also could be constructed from cheap flower buckets.

      Here are my tomato plants a couple of days ago - should I be removing side leaves or anything yet?

      PS I am about to re-pot these into their final pots (ex Morrisons flower buckets) - should I sink them any deeper into the pot or keep the soil at the same level on the stem?

        Sink them as deep as you can FC, the more stem in the soil then the more roots that can grow from it to pick up nutrients and water from the soil. And you only pick out sideshoots on cordon (indeterminate) variety tomatoes, these start to grow in the axis between leaf and main stem.

            The day of judgement was intended to be today for mine, but to be honest I have knackered myself making some of my pots and baskets up, and then doing the first stage of reclaiming a border from the lawn (it had been left to become one with the grass, but has now been all dug out and I've planted three lupins, and sowed three lavatera seeds which will hopefully get the border restarted);

            Yeah, I really need to get on with re-potting the cucumbers tonight, so that they are a bit more stable than they are now.

            They are 'Moneymaker' - there were so many varieties available, I ended up going with one that I remembered my mum talking about :oops: - I am not a big fan of small tomatoes either (although that is almost certainly because the supermarket ones aren't anything like as good as they would be home grown).

            Being my first year growing fruit and veg, I decided to stick with one variety for now, and if I am successful then next year I might well try for a few different varieties (I'd love to grow beef tomatoes).

              i've potted my Maskotka today into their final position...just need to do my Alicante and Beefmaster.....i need a bigger GH....I've had a right performance trying to find places for them....daren't leave anything outside though the forecast isn't too bad untill friday when MORE frosts are due after that for us here:mad:

                Side shoots on Cordon (i.e. if they are NOT a Bush variety) yes.

                Leaves no. Only remove leaves that you have to (yellow / dead, or in order to plant deep), or once the truss has developed sufficiently that you want to get more light & air in - but I never remove lower leaves on my plants for that reason (but opinions vary).

                The plant needs leaves to make energy, don't be in a rush to remove healthy ones.

                  Thanks :) - I will have to remove some lower leaves from mine to get them really deep in these bigger pots, but that will be it for them then unless they need more light later on.
