My latest sowing of runner beans, sown 1 bean each into 11 loo roll tubes filled with compost, has so far got 8 successes in it. 5 of which are already about 6 inches tall. The rest are just visible. There are a couple more than have bulges in the compost as though somebody is about to burst out:)

      Same same Clueless1
First lot nothing at all April 2nd
Second lot nothing at all April 19th
Third lot, I soaked overnight in water after having nicked each one with a scrapper
Potted up and 100% now up after ten days, and two from my first sowing April 2nd

Just too damn cold I think

A late frost could still knock them on the head Harry, like the idea of the sheltered position, as the wind doesn't do them any favours.

All the Bridgewater beans are up now:dbgrtmb:

Cheers Ziggy , I planted them today - so they now have 2 chances . :WINK1:
I am blaming all this veggy growing malarky , that I started last year , on you :psnp: I was quite happy with my Petunias and Busy Lizzies , but you and the others extolling the virtues of a vast array of veg , has got me started ( very small scale though )

PS: As a Somerset lad , you should got to the back of the class for your Bridgwater spelling :snork:

I have put 12 "Allegria" french dwarf beans in a fold of moist kitchen paper , slid it into a plastic bag ,laid it in a plastic tray AND popped it in the airing cupboard. Not too hot in there, packet says 1 to 2 weeks. SO, 5,4,3,2,1 THE RACE IS ON.:dancy::dancy::dancy:

I too always thought it was Bridgewater. I saw it written down somewhere, and thought they'd spelled it wrong. Anyway, it SHOULD be BridgEwater:dbgrtmb:

Sowed my climbing french beans yesterday in loo rolls sitting in a bed of compost that will help maintain moisture. I've been saving 2 litre lemonade bottles that I'll use as mini cloches when I plant them out.

                    Hiya Dave.

I reckon that's a good idea, regarding the use of bottles as cloches. With my own limited experience, I've noticed just how tender beans (french and runner) are, even when relative care is taken to harden them off. I've given up on early sowings, and now sow direct.

                    Cheers...Freddy
