Well, where to start really, apart from wondering if you are all trying to scare me off. Are you all secretly living in lovely rural bliss and trying to discourage the likes of me from sharing it!? Yes, there are lots of ups and downs to consider and Fidget that's quite a comprehensive list you've taken the trouble to write up, thanks (I think :WINK1 though it could easily be a description of nissan hut living during the war LOL. I don't really think I'm ready yet for the croft in the Highlands 20 miles from the nearest neighbour, but was more wondering about a few miles out of a wee village somewhere lovely (and cheap preferably).

I'm going to watch the American werewolf in London as I've never seen it, though the title does sound somewhat unrelated. Obviously has some useful tips on rural living as it is suggested by so many of my kind fellow posters!

Sheal, I don't think I could live on such a small island as lovely as it sounds, but I have managed as you have to live in a small place and remain fairly anonymous except to a few who I actually like. I'm sure there is plenty of gossip, but frankly I couldn't care less though I am intrigued at what scenarios they have come up with, I dread to think ...

 

I prefer living in a built up area close to the large shopping centres etc

my very 1st home was on a 6 acre plot of land in South Africa .... I bought the land, and had the house built

miles away from work, 5 minute drive to get a loaf of bread, and no kids nearby for my children to play with

lived there a year and sold (for a healthy profit) and moved back to civilization

you can get a home that offers privacy in a built up area

Define '...a few ..' We were just over 3 miles - sometimes it could have been the middle of the Australian outback. As for ' .. cheap ..', well, either it's falling down, 'in need of modernisation,' or the current owners are going stir crazy and just want out! In our case, by the time the 'modernisation' was dealt with - which was fun - we had 3 small children, all of whom had to be driven everywhere, including two who had be taken to and from school every day - which wasn't!

 

My mother's definition of 'a house in the country' is any property which doesn't have a London bus thundering past its front door. 'Isolated' is to live more than a stone's throw from a decent shopping centre. There was consternation recently when my sister suggested that things might be a little easier if Mum were to move a little nearer to her. My mother explained that she couldn't even think of living in such a remote area, especially at her age.

My sister lives in central Sevenoaks.

 

I'll go with what has already been said. especially the phone/broadband connection, deliveries etc. Also, the country is dirtier/dustier (your car will always need cleaning), there are more insects and wildlife (both good & bad), it is cooler than the town. (no buildings to heat up the air)
On the other hand, amongst the good things you get peace* and quiet and no nosy neighbours.

In my experience the words 'few miles out of a wee village somewhere lovely'....and .......'cheap' do not go together!

*Other than cockerels crowing, cows mooing, sheep barring, birds squawking,insects buzzing,frogs & toads singing, the odd tractor............:WINK1:

 

I my neck of the woods, they are lots of nosy neighbours, they like to gossip and tell lies, so they are always looking over the hedge or through it, to see what they can see going on

Well when I said cheap, I meant reasonable, don't think I could stretch to a country manor more like a manor in the cockney sense. And wildlife rather than wild neighbours sounds spot on for me.
Sheal thanks for the positive note! Fidget, it sounds like you chose right even though there were hurdles to overcome.
I've got a few areas I'm going to try to explore a bit when I get the chance and see how the land lies.

I live in a village,where you are a incomer, if you were not born and breed in the village, it has one big family, so if you havn't got 6 toes your not a villager, even has a tin baths on the wall which gets used as a bath
