planted up 2 hanging baskets for a client ....

nothing special .... just 2 trailing Huecherella in each basket which was hanging on each side of the front door of the house

planted a Huecherella redstone falls and heucherella yellowstone falls in each basket (1st time that I have planted these)

today, I was working in the garden next door, and decided to check if the hanging baskets needed watering as I planted them a few days ago

both are gone ... (brackets are still on the wall though, and doubt that kids would nick them) .... the house is right against the pavement/walkway (there is no front garden)

My hanging baskets are fairly close to the road, and stuff does very occasionally get knicked (taken for a walk) by 'high spirited' village youths after partying 'till the early hours of a weekend, so I use a short length of heavy duty fencing straining wire to tightly bind the top of the chains to the inside of the bracket, and never had a problem.

Annoying to say the least but some people have no respect for other peoples' property, barbed wire around the bracket would do it but you or the client would get sued.:frown:

phoned the client and told her .... she just laughed and said 'Oh well'

sad, as I would have liked to see how these look after a few months .... they were still small and only cost £6 each

will look at the wire gadgets for all future hanging baskets

How do you know they've been nicked Dim? Ok, they're not where you put them, but could the owner (your client) have simply moved them? Maybe the owners were worried they'd get nicked so pre-emptively put them somewhere safe until they can sort out securing them perhaps?

I spoke to my client .... she lives alone and has not hidden then .... they are gone and someone else has them ....

she is not too bothered though, but I very much doubt that she will want to get any more hanging baskets

That's a shame. I hate thieving toe rags.

That's probably the worst bit. When someone reaches the point where they accept it is normal. Its good in many ways that she's not too bothered, but if it was the first time in her life someone had stole from her, she'd be busting a blood vessel with rage just on the principal of the matter. If she's not too bothered she must have had to get used to that sort of thing.

I don't understand some people. An elderly man at the end of the street made two wooden windmills ,standing @2ft tall. They were well made, in great detail.
They stood in his garden for 24hourgardenersed by one day and the 2 windmills had been smashed to bits. Some Idiots had jumped over the fence and smashed them ,For fun.:frown::scratch::scratch:.

Please tell your neighbour that we, in the GC feel very sad for him and that the joy he got during the time it took him to make them can ,in no way be compared with the pathetic little toe rags feelings. I only hope they will grow up and realise what a silly thing it is to do rubbish like this.
        sincerely,

You can have a lot of money in front of your house . A nice planter with a bay tree or box in it can easily be £100 . A pair of them can be very tempting for our light fingered yobbo friends. It really is good sense to have a security cable attached to them.

You're right, but even worse is that often the theft is not prompted by the value of the item, but just because its there.

Not quite the same thing, but a couple of years or so ago Redcar council saw fit to spend a bit of money on those big communal planters that you see in many towns. Its the only time I know of that they splashed out on something nice. I was still living away at the time and would go out boozing with my mates whenever we came up home. I got sick of going out. Not because I didn't enjoy my mate's company, but because I got sick of having to to 'emergency gardening' at 2:30AM on a saturday or sunday on the way home, finding plants randomly strewn all over the roads and pavement and picking them up, taking them to their communal planter, and replanting them, knowing that they'll just get ripped out again before they have chance to recover. It is just inbred neandertal freaks who think it is ok to steal or destroy other people's stuff just because they can.

Some years ago a friend of ours, who lives in a town, had their whole front hedge stolen during the night. Their front garden is only 15ft deep and their bedroom window looks out onto the front! The hedge had been there for at least 20 years :hate-shocked:

an update ... went to the garden centre last week ... saw hanging baskets with brackets that have a slot that fits onto the frame, and that you can add a padlock on the bottom so that it does not get nicked

bought 2 baskets with the frames .... ordered another 2 huecherella redstone falls and 2 yellowstone falls ...they arrived yesterday

planted them up this morning and added the brackets to the walls .... forgot to buy the coco lining, but had some old ones at home

looks ok, huecherella are still small though and will start trailing in a month or so....

I am giving this as a gift to the lady (she is a top client), .... she does not know yet, as she parks in the back yard and uses the back door when she gets home
