Well, I've been having a good twizzle today and got a lot out but there's still loads & loads of it. There are baskets under the water with what looks like lillies trying to grow out of them but they may have had it! :eeew:

Twizzle some more. Looking after a pond is more than "dig a hole throw in a plastic sheet, fill it up leave it"
I am NOT saying that's what you said, I am saying that to have a pond it does need looking after, part of that looking after is cleaning out the "rubbish"

I have been known to use a pressure washer in my pool.

I have also just spent the best part of an hour pulling weeds out from around my small pool. (around it, not in it) I unfortunately noticed the trellis near the pool needs a lick of paint, so I will do that now.

You've obviously got too much nutrient in the pond water, Walter, and while that continues you'll spend a life time "twizzling " it out:wallbanging: . I honestly scratch my head when I hear of ponds with filters and all the modern technology still having problems with algae and silkweed:scratch::dunno: The only gadget I've got is the pump for the waterfall and heater. I rely on natural means to remove the nutrient from the pond water and the only weeds I've got in it are the ones I put there.

we used to have a pond and the water stayed clear as long as there were fish in it and we did not let it silt up, if the water is to shallow then it warms up quick and all sorts of things will grow in it.

Barley straw is good costs about £ 5 for a 2pack( i use it in summer and it keeps it clear for months) at most good pet shops,i think the its a bit early to use at moment i dont think the water temps are high enough to release the chemicals from it? i could do with a twizzle stick lolimac :blue thumb: i use my net but then have to root threw it to check for tadpoles to save :heehee: not a nice job :eeew: x

Hi Joolz, well, fish will eat a little of the weed but not all of it and they also add to the problem by producing waste into the water adding to the unwanted nutrients. You need to tackle the source of the problem i.e: taking the nutrients out of the pond water....do that and there's no weed to twizzle!!:snork:

Barley Straw is good and cheap (not for blanket weed I think? but more for the green algae surface-floating muck I think ??) but it takes (from memory) 28 days to do its stuff, so don't be disheartened if nothing happens quickly, and in future years put it in 28 days before you need it (not quite as daft as it sounds, its the warm weather that brings the weed on, so mid March is about the right time to renew the Barley straw each year [again, from memory, I'm sure someone will correct me if I've misremembered]

Yup, that's been my experience too Joolz - anticipating the weed by 5 weeks is the key! Perhaps I should start selling "Crystal Balls and Barley Straw Combos" on eBay?!!

The usual that plants need to grow. Nitrogen, Phosphate, Potash, and the light from the sun will cause weeds and algae to grow. They're all in fish waste, soil, insects that die, vegetation rotting in the pond, dust blown in by the wind etc. You've seen my pond and how clear it is and that's how it's always been because I've used marginal plants, oxygenating plants, and the linked bog garden plants to extract the nutrients out. They take the nutrients they need to grow out of the water and the algae and silk weed just don't have enough food to grow and the water keeps clear.
