B&Q will miss my custom about as much as I miss their self service checkout packing in immediately after I've finished man handling heavy objects past the scanner, and then having to wait 10 full minutes for the one member of staff to turn up to tell me its my debit card, which works everywhere else, that's at fault.

Not much point really - canes are a natural resource and the gathering, sorting packing etc., provides employment for people in rather poor parts of the world. The leaves and off-cuts are almost certainly used by the local people as fuel or something else. True the canes have to be shipped around the world, but then so would any synthetic everlasting product which would no doubt be made in China, India or similar.

And, as mentioned above buy 8ft canes then when the ends rot, cut them to 6ft, then 4ft and so on. The rotted and broken bits can go on the compost heap.
