Sorry if I have posted this in the wrong place, but I am in need of the learned opinions of the ladies and gents of this forum; Like most gardens, I have bits of my grass that I cannot get to with the lawn mower (against walls etc), so am considering buying a strimmer - however, as I don't have an awful lot of bits that would need done, I am wondering what sort of strimmer I would need?

I saw a 'Powerbase' strimmer in Homebase last week for £14 - I understand this is probably Homebase's own brand, but does anyone know if they are up to much?

I don't want to spend more than I have to, given the use, but equally having been bitten by a too-cheap pressure washer a few years back I don't want to waste my money completely.

    Any advice gratefully accepted :)

You could always buy a lawn edge trimmer which would do the same job.

I can't offer a recommendation as I'm also looking for a one at the mo, but I would warn you against the Bosch Art strimmers which are rubbish.

        Good luck.

p.s. Whether you end up buying elsewhere I find it is always useful checking reviews on amazon, argos etc. Wish I'd done that before buying the bodgy Bosch.

rather buy a pair of clippers (not sure what the proper name is)

then save up and buy a used Stihl petrol strimmer off ebay or gumtree .... send it in for a service (£30-£40) and you will have a good strimmer for a very long time

A while ago, before I fell out with a certain DIY chain, I bought a lawnmower and strimmer set for just £65 for the pair. The lawn mower is great, with adjustable cutting height, a grass box, and good sharp steel blades. The strimmer in the set is a bit rubbish to be honest, but it does the job very well on the small bits I need it for.

I believe Argos do a very similar set. My set is very similar to this:
            http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produ...418702/c_2/2|14418702|Lawnmowers|14418813.htm

I'm guessing you don't need a mower, so there's no point buying the set, but my point is I'm happy enough with the cheapo strimmer in such sets. Its rubbish, but its ok for ocassional use on small areas, as is typical of looking after a urban/suburban back garden.

I always thought they were like a strimmer, but mounted sideways to allow you to roll them up the side of the lawn? Would one of those be capable of doing around the poles of the wee ones swing etc?

This is where my internal argument started - I saw a set of them for £15, and then the cheapo strimmer for £14 - elbow grease versus power tool for the same money (assuming of course that either of the tools is any good)?

I agree that a used, good strimmer would be far superior, however I would invariably forget petrol when I needed it, and I'm not all together sure that it wouldn't be overkill for my needs.

I'd also almost certainly forget to charge a cordless one such as the one mentioned by Andy Campbell above - much as the lack of a wire would make life easier.

I have a mower, yes, so only need a strimmer/trimmer - and that about sums up my needs to be honest, wouldn't suggest that it would be heavily stressed.

PS - if the certain DIY store you refer to was Homebase, you do realise that Argos are the same company?

I'm really glad to have asked now, because the Bosch ART 23 was the other one I was looking at as my 'brand name' choice, simply because I have loads of Bosch appliances - - what is wrong with them as a matter of interest?

The certain DIY chain isn't Homebase, its the other one:)

However I once fell out with Argos too. They wouldn't sell me a telly. I had the cash, they had the telly. I had the car outside, and being of at least average strength, was confident that I could easily carry said telly the short distance from shop to car. However because, so they claimed, they needed two people in store who had the necessary manual handling certificates, and they only had one there at the time, I'd have to order the telly to be delivered in at least 14 days but possibly up to 28 days. So I went to Currys (or whatever they're now called), which is part of the Dixons group, who I also fell out with once:loll:

Its not difficult to fall out with these big chains - I fell out with Tesco some years ago, and barely shop in the place even now.

Apologies for the double post - I got a message saying that the server didn't respond??

Mowgley - that might just be the answer, thanks :)

fat controller (I was going to call you fatty for short, but thought better of it), the Bosch ART strimmers have a real problem with the line spool and feed, always snapping and the feed mechanism is badly designed. They also have a cutting angle that means you have to hold the thing is a bizarre angle.

Let me know what you get, good luck.

I had to go to Homebase this afternoon to get more compost, so bit the bullet whilst I was there and bought a Qualcast GT25

Had I read the reviews first, I probably wouldn't have - however, I did and used it this afternoon and never had a problem with it.

I have the Argos challenge that came with the mower ,not so happy with the mower as quite cumbersome I find, the cordless strimmer once you get used to it is great, now living in terror of when the line runs out and got to refill it  :help:
