The marketing strategy must have worked well.
There's 1Million+ ticket on general sale from tomorrow.
I thought the idea was to pre-sell - especially when they were so over-subscribed in January (or so they said!)

So London will be quieter than usual this summer?
    I dont think so.
Also the Olympics is probably only going to have an effect for a month or so, the tourist season last a bit longer than that, even in rainy old Britain.

And its not just London, there are other events being held in other places.

I feel sorry for anyone that has to commute to London every day for work, that is surely going to be nightmare for the duration of the games.

Very true pete. The olympic road cycling race comes down through Surrey near us and when they held a practice event masses of spectators turned up with resulting road chaos for commuters. It's going to be very busy for the real thing. I've read about the same thing for each of the other events where they are holding practices.

I'm not complaining, it's well publicised when the real event is being held so no need to venture out into that area, and the council have suddenly found the money to tarmac the roads nicely. I'll go and watch it anyway even though I know nothing about cycling, along with the torch relay it will be a spectacle and not something we will get the chance to see again in our lifetime.

If I could have got tickets I would go to the olympic park and watch the athletics.

As regards boosting the economy, many folk we know are working in the olympic park on building jobs. They reckon there will be work for at least a couple of years after because a lot of the facilities are only temporary.

The other half works for London Underground and maintains the signalling systems on the central line. All annual leave has been denied for the 2 weeks of the Olympic games on the underground. Our anniversary is on the 28th July and he's working that day because of the sodding games. Since we met he has always taken that day off as it's a special day for us both, we don't celebrate valentines day but instead make a big deal about this day instead.

Not a happy woman as a result.

a couple of day's paid sick leave is what I would do if I were him .... but he should keep quiet about his plan though and not tell anyone (even his best mates at work)

he can blame it on food poisioning from a dodgy takeaway (I always done that for my birthdays when I worked at companies)

Understand Jane, from a feminine point of view but it only happens once.
A nice bottle of Bolly in the evening might help,:imphrt:

Unfortunately my other half is working nights I think. London Underground has a very tight drink and drugs policy. He can't take any drugs or drink 8 hours before a shift and they do random urine tests every now and then. So no drink for him

That's a bummer Jane. I'd drop a strong letter to Mr Boris Johnson and demand a free pass to the Games.:lunapic 130165696578242 5:

For them of us what commute, London is a nightmare any time!

My son-in-law works for TfL and is currently on their 'Olympic Team' (that's planning not taking part!). He gleefully tells me there are are special 'Olympic lanes' for traffic to get athletes and officials to and from the main stadium without interruption - reminiscent of Moscow.

Now, two things spring to mind here ...

1 - If there's an Olympic village, why do athletes and officials not damned well stay in it?

            and, more to the point

2 - Anyone who's worked, driven or visited London will know that even on a 'good' day the traffic can be horrendous, so why in the name of sanity are TfL taking traffic that normally uses two lanes and squeezing it into one?

Now ... is that brilliant or what? And I bet I know which lane Seb Coe and his funny little friends will be using.

I wouldn't want to go to the games even if they paid me, was a nice idea though.I would prefer Boris granted a well done bonus to all the people who keep the underground running during those two weeks but it's not happening. RMT isn't happy about it and are planning to strike over it.

The cycle track is near to where I live and I'm not even thinking of stepping outside my town that day as traffic will probably be worse than usual.

I understand Jane. Living in London has as many drawbacks as advantages I imagine. Me? Just a country lass with straw in my hair. Never lived outside a 10 mile radius of where I am now....
Sorry, still say we drew the "lucky " ticket and we are hosting it come rain or shine. This will be the only games in my lifetime ....

Its not fair is it. If all goes well, then some suits will pat each other on the back, award each other a great big bonus and tell the world how it was them personally that made it work. All while those that did make it work get nowt.

Or if it is an utter disaster, then some suits will pat each other on the back, then tell the world how they did a tremendous job, and it would have been a great success if not for the failings of those expected to work with three or four times the workload but with no extra resources.
