thanks Clare .... these are from david Austin ....

there are several Gertrude Jekyll .... stems are brown .... some have buds and some dont .... but some buds are brown?

the others are molineux .... they have green stems and no buds at all?

I will keep watering and keep the soil damp, but won't overwater

I see that David Austin are still selling bare root now on their site

Hmmm. Usually the way I check what's going on is to pick off a bud. Vandalism, I know, but you'll soon see whether it's dead or not and it can tell you something about the cane, too - is there a green patch where the bud was attached? (Good sign, if there is.) The other thing you can do is trim a cane with some secateurs. A viable cane will be green inside and sappy; a dead one will be dessicated. Roses can also shoot from the base, of course - above the graft, hopefully, or you've got a sucker!

I'll think you'll find that your late planted dry root roses, dim, will compromise by trying to to put down a proper root system while putting out some stem and leaf growth to get as much food in it's system before the Winter arrives. So you might get some growth, and possibly even a flower or two, but they'll be much better next season.:snork:

I have found David Austen has a good Customer Service record, should anything not come up to scratch. They have a good reputation that they are keen to maintain.
Just so annoying if you lose a growing year though,

thanks Jenny ... I have bought loads of roses from David Austin and always recomend them .... brilliant service and I will always buy from them

I'm just worried about the bare root as it's late in the year .... have not seen anything happen yet and am getting frustrated ....

but I know that if they don't take, and I email david austin, I'm 100% certin that I will get others .... but don't want to take that route and hope these will take

I'm just a bit impatient sometimes .... but I doubt that David Austin would sell bare root at this time of year if they are not 100% certain that they will thrive

I'm jealous, lolimac, as my roses are still budding up:biggrin:. That looks like a really nice rose, and I haven't had a Sherbert Lemon in years:snork:

That's true, lolimac. The garden can change overnight due to plants suddenly flowering. I've got a dwarf Philadelphus Manteau d'Hermine which has hundreds of buds on it and I bet it will come into flower this weekend while I'm at Shiney's:dunno:

Loli, that's scumptious. I can imagine the perfume you have described.Thank you for posting it tonight. I adore rose scents - all of them, especially on a warm, sultry night with a hint of thunder rumbling around...,

Please forgive my indulgence in roses but I am so enjoying seeing yours and showing you mine.2nd picture is the Kerastase bud - now opened up today. 1st picture, a dark red that I could get near enough to to take a piccie of. 3rd picture- All other family members are racing upward and are now upstairs. I do not know the name of this one. 2 were planted either side of the kitchen window in the early '90's by the previous occupants ( now both pushing up daisies). They certainly left behind a lovely rose for us to enjoy.
Apologies for poor presentation. I'm no good at uploading piccies on GC.

Unfortunately I don't know Jenny because it was being sold as an indoor plant in Morrisons, but didn't name the rose

Maybe someone else could advise what it is? It's a patio rose so the flowers are quite small.

Failing that I'm happy to take a cutting for you (only just split it so will give it a bit of time to establish in its new pot first) :)
