What jobs are we doing today in the garden ?

Not much today. Been raining on and off all day.
Have been taking a closer look at the magnolia Susan I planted at the end of march. It seems to be struggling.
It had a few flowers on it when it flowered now it only has a few green leaves showing through.
I've read that they take a few years to settle down.
Next doors is doing fine bait it is a lot bigger than mine!

 

Tied in my rasps,watered my baskets,stared at my tomato's and prayed for my pumpkin seeds.....

when we bought the new house in '90, we purchased one of the first available Mag. Susan's. It took a couple of years to settle but never ceased to delight after that.It was ours until we moved on in 2006. Not a tall grower but a bit broad in the backside ( know the feeling) but it will forgive quite hard pruning if you have to do it. Maybe mulch it and feed it this year and it will reward you next Spring. A delightful little tree,

Thought as much. It's planted in full sun and the soil is quite sandy but added loads of compost. Scratched the bark back and it's still green so it's not dead

The snowdrop one is from December its the earliets it has ever flowered

 

had a google to see what a Magnolia Susan looks like .... only read one or 2 sites, but read that they need acid fertilizer/soil, and that they should be planted in a sheltered spot etc:

it also states on the top section that you can plant it full sun, so perhaps they mean that sheltered implies little wind?

I'd also feed it some seaweed extract such as maxicrop or similar .... you can apply via a soil drench or/and foliar feed ....

a very nice tree, and worthwhile spending a bit to get it established

I grow Susan she is a bit slow growing and a bit twiggy growth , and only produced 3 flowers !!! this year .

I would say yes with the shelter

Planted strawberries and cucumbers. Put up pop up grow house for peppers, unable to put peppers in as my son took it over as his new den. Potted on some perrenials and had a general tidy up. Then ended up playing football with my son for an hour.

 

Gave it another good mulch today and a good water.
The roots will be in the shade when the ferns establish around it lol

 

Had a lazy day today. Hubby bought me a tree for my birthday, that's coming soon unfortunately. I'll reveal that when it's planted.

Just come in from the T.T. course, blink and they're gone!
