hi all, I noticed this year a decline in the insects visiting the garden. The fruit trees have set quite well but very few bumble or honey bees also few flies. There was a mas exodus of may flies but very little otherwise. Anyone else noticed this.

I reluctantly have to agree with you Hans. Year on year there seems to be less....
Let's hope it was that awful grey Spring that retarded their arrival and that things will start to buzz and flutter more now it's warmed up. Our cotoneaster bushes are starting to attract quite a lots of different types of bees now.

I must be bucking the trend in my back garden, bees, ladybirds, spiders and flies are plentiful, butterflies are sparodic depending on the weather. The only thing that i haven't seen many of yet are hover flies, but they seemed to be more noticeable later on in the summer last year..:blue thumb:

The number of bees working the flowers in the garden do seemed to have picked up this last work. While I was sitting by the pond today there were a fair few around the Yellow Flag Irises, Marsh Marigolds etc. There does seem to be a lower number of Hover Flies, but as Bilbo says they do seem to appear more in the Summer.:snork:

I may have to ask you folks to send me some over to Mid Wales as my runners will soon be flowering :) . I expect things will improve this month but more rain on the way.
