Has anybody else noticed how hugely expensive these guys are?? i buy a protein bar from there a "weider 30% protein bar" think it costs £2.30 for a single bar!! And everything else in there is extremely expensive too. Good stuff, just a rip off.

There penny sales make me laugh too. It is just buy one get one free but instead of free you still have to pay a penny and its only on selected stock. I have a friend who has worked in a HnB for years now. She has pointed out to me that there is not a single camera in their shop, or any other HnB shop for that matter, anywhere. I said "dont you get loads of shoplifters in stealing the stock??"
"yea all the time, we just let them take it if we spot them stealing most of us are too scared too confront shoplifters that come in here"

The stock costs that little too buy, its not worth installing CTCV to stop people stealing it, they just charge the people who do pay extra for the loss and then have the cheek to send a letter round to all their staff stating that if they get caught stealing they will be prosecuted

How about use some of that money that your making to put in some cameras then i dont have to pay £2.30 for a protein bar!

There's cheaper sources of protein than Holland & Barrett - just grow your own veg (elephants seem to grow strong enough with any supplements).

Holland and Barrett is good for some things. I like the non-alcoholic green ginger wine they sell for example, and it is convenient for the likes of essential oils. Basically it is a convenient medicine shop for when I'm lurgied up.

I wouldn't say its a health food shop though. I can't see how eating bars and powders made up of extracts of this, that and t'other can be more healthy than actual food and drink.

Essential oils for blasting great holes in a snot blockage, great. Ginger wine for settling a turbulent stomach and warming a cold stricken body, great. Over priced bars of re-formed who knows what to replace good old fashioned food, not so good.

We stopped buying stuff at Holland & Barrett (+ Julian Graves) ever since they ceased stocking Tartex vegetarian pate in favour of that rubbishy Grano Vita stuff that tastes worse than sawdust - & we also hate that company because they bought up Sosmix and changed the recipe to their own rubbishy inferior 'Grano' one, but kept the name.

EDIT: We've actually 'aquired' stuff from our local H&B, but not 'bought' it, because they were giving out vouchers for free chocolate covered raisins when they opened the store, so we had so many 'repeated trips' to their local store that we had about a year's supply of them for free.

A normal balanced diet will give you a roughly equal 3 way split between protein, carbs and fats. If you were to consistently skew that balance too far in favour of the proteins, you could do long term damage to your liver. If you're eating right, then you're getting enough protein.

EDIT: Incidentally, if you get more protein than your body needs, apart from putting unnecessary stress on your liver, the excess will just be treated as surplus calories anyway, so that fat portion of your diet, which is hardest to digest, will be the one that gets saved up. I.e, you put on weight, but probably not the kind of weight you want.

Hey you guys, no-one's forcing you to walk through the door!

Hydrogen, shame on you, have you not visited that first and last amongst emporiums yet?

        http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Weider-32...auty_Vitamins_Supplements&hash=item1e6e157dfe

I occasionally go into H&B and indeed find the prices a bit jaw-dropping, but then I do in most places. Also, I eat normal, proper food, not imitation food. Most people in shops like that look neither well-nourished nor healthy, which is rather strange.

Whatever is "solgar omnium"? How have I lived for 58 years without it?

Madahhlia ~ Solgar Omnium is the capital of Mongolia.
I have found that large plates of chips with fried processed meat a side salad of pork scratchings , 20 Lambert and Butler , 12 cans of cider and a bottle ( small ) of gin every day keeps me spritely :chicken:

I get what everyone is saying about eating natural but at the end of the day if you train twice a day at a gym lifting weights and doing rowing machines its hard to get 3 or 4000 calories down ya without protein bars or drinks. Ask any weight trainer or gym instructer. This kinda reminds me of the "why grow organic" thread a bit. Protein bars work for me and millions of other people that eat them, yes there are going to be brands out there are rubish and mite do ya harm then so do certain brands of food you buy you cant grow everything yourself can ya!! As for protein bars damaging your liver that makes me laugh!!

no matter how healthy you eat, there is no way that you can supply your body with a bit of all the vitamins that are available and needed

I am a firm believer in eating healthy, excercising etc ....

however I also am a firm believer in using a really good vitamin in conjunction with a healthy diet ... your body will use the vitamins it needs, and the rest will be flushed out when you pee

solgar omnium is one of the better ones, but it's not sold at holland and barrett ... I get it from another health store ... a bit pricey though if you compare it to some others .... dosage states 2 tabs per day, but I only take 1, and only take it 5 times a week .... for 50 pence per tablet, it's a bargain :)

            has the following:
            Vitamin C 300mg
            Vitamin E (300iu) 201mg
            Choline 75mg
            Magnesium 32mg
            Calcium 64mg
            Pantothenic acid 80mg

i train to put on weight Dim, plus im very tall and have a very fast metabolism so i need extra protein ontop of the healthy diet i have. I have never seen any need for vits in my own case although under some circumstance i see why you may want them. Like my Mum has an iron defiency atm so she takes iron tablets or summet untill she has had her operation but thats another story.
Weider 32% protein bars and omega 3 thats all i need from there and i get nutritional advice from mens health mags or gym instructors

gym instructors and health mags are like gardeners and gardening magazines

some seldom fertilize ... and some always do .... and everyone has his/her own method

ask 10 gym instructors about diet and you will get 10 different opinions ...

your body is like a plant/shrub .... feed and fertilize it correctly and it will be in it's peak

what it does not need, it flushes out .... if you take vitamins for the 1st time, your pee is a normal colour as your body uses most of the vitamins .... after a few days of taking vitamins regulary, your pee darkens, as your body does not use all the vitamins ... but they are there if needed

thats my opinion (I used to go to gym 5 times a week and do cardio (bike, stepping, running and rowing), and one circuit with light weights
