What's the point of school reunions? Has anyone here ever been to one?

A mate of mine who coincidentally was in my wife's class at school keeps suggesting that they organise one sometime, but I don't see the point.

It seems to me that people I knew at school fall broadly into one of 4 categories:

    1. Good friends, in which case we're still in contact anyway.
    2. Casual friends where we drifted apart as soon as school ended, because we weren't really friends anyway, we just got on well enough to knock about together when we were pushed together because we had to be in the same place at the same time (school).
    3. People that I couldn't stand, and/or couldn't stand me, in which case why should I want to see them again or they me?
    4. The rest, probably about 95% of the school populous, who I didn't even get to know at all because they were just keeping their heads down trying to get through it in one piece.

So that being the case, why should it be fun to get all these people together again now?

Also, down town a couple of days ago I came face to face with a lad I was good buddies with at school. He was busy diving out of the path of a mad woman with a pushchair so didn't notice me. I opened my mouth ready to speak, but then I thought, well what will we say after the pleasantries? Aye up man, long time no see, how you doing? Long silence, pointless small talk, awkward pause, false promises about meeting for a pint to catch up, make excuse to walk away, reminisce about times when they were cool.

I agree, I don't see the point, it will be a case of who has got fatter and balder than "you" (who ever you are) and if some one still looks like they did then, everyone will hate them for it.
Also as you said, a bunch of lies false promises about what you have done and meeting up to talk about old times. No point what so ever.

Although I wouldn't want to go to a reunion (I'm a miserable old git) I have heard of some good things that have come out of them.

My sister went to one and met a friend that she had lost touch with (both had moved away - my sister was abroad for a few years) and always regretted it. They now see each other regularly and are the best of friends.

I know of others in similar situations - including two (male and female) who used to really fancy each other when they were in the 5th and 6th forms but their parents didn't approve (yes, I'm that old :heehee: ). Apparently, they both married other people, had families and were very happy but their spouses have since died. At the age of 70 they went to a school reunion, got re-acquainted and have been very happily married for five years. :dbgrtmb:

I went to a few reunions in the past (I attended a private boarding school and were were only 11 pupils in class, but were like family, as most of us had spent 5 or more years together)

it's always good to meet up again and have a laugh and a few pints ... lots of boasting and bragging though (I'm the poorest of the bunch)
      :oopss:

many of my class now live overseas so I very much doubt that there will be many reunions again

No, Dim just looks like he's abroad:biggrin:

I've chatted to a few old friends on Friends Reuntied, but don't have a lot in common anymore.

There are a few old friends I can call & chat as if we only saw each other yesterday though.
