I'm in big trouble! My wife bought a 'grow pot' (for the want of a better term) from M&S to grow Roma tomatoes from seed. They appear to be doing very well at the moment with about 50 seedlings at 10cm high. The trouble is I threw away the instructions! I would be very grateful if someone could help with advice on what to do next. Thank you.

    Hi there.

I think I'm right in saying they are an outdoor tomato. In any event, at this time they will need potting on as I'm assuming that they are all in a single pot? Pot them in into 2-3" pots, and look after them by making sure they don't get too cold at night (aim for a minimum of10c) and try to make sure they get plenty of light, otherwise they will become drawn (aka 'leggy'). In a few weeks they will have grown quite a bit, so much so that you will be able to start to harden them off. 'Hardening' is simply a process that gets the plants accustomed to living outdoors. This is done by putting them outside during the day, then bringing them back in at night. After a few days of this, you can gradually start to leave them out at night, maybe covering with polythene or something if the forecast is for a cold night. After a week or so of this, they can then be planted out. Some others here will no doubt be able to add more. Hope this helps.

    Cheers...Freddy.

Good advice from Freddy. All I can add is to ask do you really need 50 tomato plants? They do need a fair bit of space. A couple of plants will give you a reasonable amount over the summer. 10 or 12 plants would need a greenhouse sized area to grow in and you'd have enough to feed a family and give plenty away.

I grow Roma every year an outdoor plum "cooking tomato" I think of it as. It does not grow very tall so require little staking
