The moat is now full again. Nothing done in the garden. Back to work.

I couldn't find the label for the Yew Mr. Grinch, but I've had a look around the web and it's possibly Taxus Baccata 'Fastigiata Aurea'. If I get a chance I'll pop into the nursery I bought it from and check. :)

Sunny intervals AM, wet wet wet PM. Rain everywhere.
                  Mr G's Garden Watch
I was just thinking today of how little actual gardening ive done this year. Ive only mowed the lawn twice. Once in March in then again May. Other than that, too wet. I cant get to my East border due to the water and moat being in the way. And nothing done in the West border either bar spraying bind weed and Jap Anenome shoots and pulling Elder weed seedlings. Hardly exciting at all. Sure, ive bought a few plants which are in storage at the back but i feel everythings on hold until these bloomin paths are sorted. Just finding the time between, work, kids, weather and my old man is proving hard.
The plan for the next few days. Ive sourced on the NET some land drainage pipes. 25m at around £30. The Type 1 MOT has arrived and on the drive. Hopefully on Sunday, i will dig the two deep soak aways. The first under my Acer pot (Acer moved first of course) in the east border and the second in the West border where currently i have a mound of earth. The pipe will then be layed between the two, underneath the path and in the Type 1 sub base. The highest point is that corner of the play area so everything im hoping will drain in one of two directions. First though, the soak aways on Sunday, then at somepoint the pipe and type 1.
Blimey this is all taking a long time.

                  G

Last few days. RAIN RAIN RAIN. Today, sunny and nice.
                    Mr G's Garden Watch
Its been 6 days since my last update. I was starting to get withdrawals. The weather has been appalling. Last Wednesday and Thursday a storm hit, wind and rain. Lasted for 36 hours. It brightened up for Saturday afternoon and into Sunday morning but then another storm Sunday afternoon that only stopped at 3pm yesterday. The rain has been amazing. The garden flooded. The path footings like canals. The worst area was that right hand side. For some reason the water just will not drain. The left hand side also flooded but within 2/3 hours, the worst had drained away. I have done a bit of gardening. On Sunday, i dug two soakaways, one on the top left the other bottom right. I dug down four feet. After two feet, i hit the yellow clay, there's no way any water will be draining out of that. So plan B. It drains well on the left hand side but the water on the right just cant get across, so i will be digging two drainage ditches across the lawn from right to left, lining with a garden membrane then filling with shingle before wrapping with that membrane. I'll then replace the turf. I'll also fill the soakaways with shingle although i think they wont have any effect. Im hoping then that the wet right side will drain into the dryer left side, relieving my problem.
On the garden front, i pruned the Weigeila back, and did a little bit of weeding. Ive chopped back the Lupin's that had gone over. The Acer was moved to a temporary position in the play area. Mowed the lawn. I took 30 Buxus cuttings. First time ive ever done this. I hope it works, as im going to need a few plants in the coming years to go around the lawn.
The next task is to move the Type 1 MOT into the path footings as the sub base. Not sure when, but maybe at the weekend. This is the longest project in living memory.

The good news, is that most of the water has gone from the footings. Thats taken 36 hours which is much better. Will still go for another trench accross the lawn though. Whilst walking around the garden yesterday, i smelt this horrible fishy type of fragrence. Not nice. After following my nose, it was the Sorbus tree's flowers that were creating the stink. Im not bothered though as the bee's were loving them. A price worth paying. The rose scent last night was also something special. Spent the evening giving the Sedum its May chop. I find my soil is so rich, that they go over if i dont do this. Yes the flowers are smaller but look much better. Weeded and sprayed some bind weed. Prunes Lupin flowers heads back. Ive lost a few Aquilegia plants this year, i think the wet did them. For the first time this year, my pink orniemental poppy has flowered BUT the wind has knocked it over. Also shovelled some more yucky clay top soil into bags to be taken down the dump today.

Took the remaining clay sub soil to the dump. Thank goodness. I left some good crumbly stuff for the Hornbeam hedge that i will plant up against the back trellis. In preparation, i raked back the play bark then dug out the Type 1 underneath, putting it in the path footing. Waste not want not. I then turned over the wet clay soil underneath then filled it up with the nice crumbly top soil left from excavating the path footings. I then replaced the bark to keep it tidy until i can get the Hornbeam plants in. It was a toss up between Hornbeam and Beech, both make great hedges with Beech hanging onto their leaves better in winter. Unfortunataly, Hornbeam can tolerate the wet better, so won the day.
Picked my first few strawberries. Very tasty. Last year, i found an Oak tree acorn that had started to sprout underneath the kids trampoline in the bark. We have a Jay that buries these things but this was the only one to start to grow. So, i removed it, planted it up and this spring its really shot away. Four big leaves are now on it. A tip with these things, they love the dappled shade. It mirrors a wood where they would naturally colonise. Direct sun, is too much for the tender young shoots.
