I know we can't make a major difference but we can try to make "a" difference.

Tomorrrow, when we shop for our usual brands, lets make sure we buy at least 3 products from Greece.

Don't care what it is, Ozo,pasta, olives, retzina.

Just do it as opposed to where you normally get it from.

Then post up what you've bought here & like it to Facebook or whatever.

We can't do much but at least this would be a start.

What do you think good people?

It sounds a reasonable idea - but I rarely buy packaged goods. I'll have to think about this

I just got back from holiday and went shopping yesterday. Spent £67 and the only item I bought that wasn't fresh food (a lot of it local) was a pack of toilet rolls (that's no reflection on the food I ate on holiday :heehee:).

I'm not sure I remember ever noticing Greek produce in the shops! I'll have to look closer.

Retsina seems to fit with the normal GC philosophy - but the stuff I've tried wasn't exactly palatable. And I can't stand Feta cheese.
My preference would be Metaxa - Sorry Zig, but you know it's worth it.

Again apologies Zig. OH winges at going as far as Tesco's. Going to Greece for the weekly shop is a little OTT.:loll:

Good idea if the money went back to the Greek people not the Gov,
and you will get the British farmer saying we should be buying British

              'Buy Greek!' I love it.

Actually I think one of the best things we could do is to take more holidays in Greece. Not the all inclusive jobbies such as I've just had, but the type where you actually get out and spend in the local shops and restaurants.

Gardener's Corner trip to the Aegean, anyone? We could call it an educational trip to learn about Mediterranean flowers.

I think Greek food is great but they don't seem to export that much to Britain. Does the Cypressa range (olives, tahini, vine leaves etc) come from Greece, or, erm, Cyprus?

I'd like to get hold of some Greek oregano, which I've only seen once and has large, thick, felted leaves. Cretan Dittany, I think it's called.

it would be wonderful but would it be safe or would we be caught in some protest against the government...?

Hello Paula. Nice to hear from you.

No, I don't think we'd be in any danger at all. Tourist bookings to Greece are down by a third this year. I've no patience with people who wimp out because they see a few people protesting. Unless you want to holiday in a dodgy bit of Athens, there's no problem. It's a bit like all those foreigners who saw tv pictures of the London riots and decided not to come over because, obviously, we all spend our time on the streets smashing and pillaging. :heehee:

Well, that was a bit dissapointing. Just went to Tesco. Half the Feta is made in Holland, Greek "style olives are from Morroco, couldn't find the Retzina & they didn't have the currants that Scrunge mentioned.

I think its an excellent idea, and will certainly partake.

For those wanting to partake, I have a couple of thoughts (one is as Ziggy has already discovered)

                    1. A lot of 'Greek' produce is actually Dutch or German. Tesco's Greek style yoghurt is one such example. I have no doubt at all you can buy Greek produce here, all I'm saying is don't assume its Greek because it says Greek in big letters on the packaging.

                    2. If you're planning a night out any time soon, why not have a nice meal in a Greek restaraunt. Ok if its here in Blighty. It can be assumed that the Greek owners will still have family in Greece, and the Greeks being the way they are, it is common for them to send some of their money to their relatives back home in times of need.

EDIT: There's already a Facebook page for this

We're doing our bit. We are off out to Skopelos early July for a fortnight, taking a gurt wodge of euros. :dancy: Cheers, Tony.
