Ever felt unwelcome in your own garden?

Spent some time in the garden yesterday, dodging the showers, and suddenly had a funny sensation that I was being watched. And it was true. High up in the tree behind my house were at least a dozen pairs of beady little eyes just willing me to go away.

When I started putting bird feeders all over the place I didn't anticipate how unwelcome I'd be made to feel in my own garden.

my OH and I have to talk in whispers first thing in the morning as a female blackbird hangs on the window ledge gawping at us if we do not get out of bed immediately, go downstairs, unlock the back door and PUT OUT HER MUESLI.

Just do what they do in India, wear a cap with eyes on the back, they only attack from behind. Panthers that is, not Indians.

Just be glad it is not a barn swallow, they will dive bomb any human 7 feet from their nest. I also have a few nests in some thick taller shrubs around our property. One interesting nest is somehome positioned at the top lip of a window under a small room of our garage. But as of yet in general I am not hearing any baby noises from any of the nests.

 

Blimey, our Swallows just sit on the nest & stare at us, don't seem bothered by people.

 

What if you are 7'6" from their nest, when through no fault of your own, a gust of wind pushes the branch with their nest on 6 and a bit inches closer to you so you end up within 7ft?

 

Are you saying a 2oz bird can carry a half pound tape measure?

 

Well, traffic cops usually let you exceed the limit by a tiny bit before nabbing you, so my guess is the barn swallow would give you the benefit of the doubt up to about about 7ft and then go for your goolies.

Jenny, unfortunately you missed out on him, but for a long while we had Dai the Plant on the forum, who got into a lot of trouble for his use of a word rather like carp.
