Has anyone tried eating snails?

It seems to me that in this miserable weather we're all getting, if there's one edible crop that is doing extremely well for all of us, it has to be snails.

I know you can eat them, but the idea is repulsive to me. I have no logical reason for that, after all I'll eat shellfish like cockles, which are just sea bogeys as opposed to land bogeys.

Has anyone had a go?

 

They'll give you brain worms & kill you if you don't prepare them right, ask Hydrogen.

I won't even eat Whelks & Winkles as they are just sea snails.

I will eat Mussels & Cockles though

 

I saw a program on telly a while back where they collected them up and put them in a box with grass and lettuce for 2 weeks to 'purge' them. Then they boiled them for a while, let them cool, packed them with garlic butter, and then roasted them.

 

I'm still not that hungry Dave.

 

Yes , we got a winner , tryed in Spanish paella , gordon ramsey way , italian way , greek way and french way.....I think the most horrible thing is to cook them .
never tryed in uk.....
how do they taste? they taste like snails , sort of oyster but without the salt .
In case you gone try , remember to feet them for 3 days with carrots , onion or garlic.

I love escargot and yes I know there's an abundance of English ones in the garden which are there for the taking, but as I recall, even Gordon Ramsay sent his children to collect them up and that's the trouble ..... there's never 4 small children around when you need them!

 

The only think I would trust garden english snails is the fact that they can carry red worm , out of cat feces .....i know that you are boiling them , but the idea of a red worm is just a .

 

Tried them in Malta and they were delicious ,I was drunk at the time though

hummmmmm....Dim in Italy we say...la vendetta e' un piatto che va servito freddo
(Revenge is a dish best served cold) ...they eated my hostas , my poor salad , they even managed to destroy one of my favorite cactus ...is it time for an hors d'oevre .

 

The only trouble with English snails is that they're full of slug pellets otherwise i might have given them a go:WINK1:

 

Drifting off topic, I love it when I find that in another country, in another language, they have an old saying that means exactly the same thing as something here

I have a Taiwanese mate, Leo, and he's told me a few of his old proverbs, translated into English for my benefit. I'll come back to that point.

The other week, my dad and I were talking, and I can't remember how it came about but he decided it would be appropriate to impart some old wisdom. He asked, 'Have you ever heard the tale of the Willow and the Oak?'. I said I hadn't, so he proceeded to tell me about the oak mocking the willow because every time there was a storm, the oak would stand fast while the willow would get buffeted all over the place. Then one day, in the worst storm, while the willow was nearly bent to the ground, the oak, which had stood fast, suddenly snapped at the roots and collapsed.

I started laughing, and I told my dad how Leo had already imparted his oriental equivalent of this tale by simply stating "The tree that bends in the wind, wont break". To which my dad sheepishly replied, 'well, they always did have a way with words in that part of the world'.

 

With the money I`ve spent in slug pellets just to save the hostas every year , i would actually both 5 new hostas every year....has i grow most exotic plant , the only plant they are eating is the hostas and few more.....all the rest are toxic and poisonous ....no one is eating the ricinus , bananas , brugmansia , fern and so on ...
I`m sure is my neighbours that keep tossing snails in my garden .
