I have some cream californian poppies grown from see this year.

I am on sand so my orange/yellow ones are lovely, but these have become so lush that they have flopped over from the centre. Can I cut back these poppies and will they flower again this year?

    Thanks

I think you stand every chance of them flowering later if you give them a trim now.

Its probably been too wet for them up till now and that might explain the over lush growth.

The wet muggy weather has had a bizarre effect on the opium poppies in my garden. Normal height is about 3ft, this year they are averaging about 4-5ft, with one or two of them actually nearly as tall as me.

Mine are about 4ft at the moment Clueless and about to open. These are from the seeds you sent me, thanks. :) Unfortunately I've lost some due to stem rot at the base and tomorrow I need to go out and stake the others before they collapse.

I'm glad they're mostly doing ok for you Sheal, but sorry to hear some are struggling. I've never had to stake them though. Is it too windy for them perhaps? Or could it be all the rain that's to blame I wonder. I know in previous years I've noticed that opium poppies thrive on neglect, tolerating conditions too dry for many plants, so perhaps they are more adapted to drought than they are to the rain.

Mine have just started blooming in the last few days. Probably 2 months late compared to previous years because of the weather. I haven't allowed as many to grow as I usually do, but there'll still be enough to share plenty of seeds again when the time comes.

No it's not been windy Clueless, it really is down to the amount of rain we've had. I garden on sand and stem rot is very unusual. The staking is because the stems are weak and the plants are leaning over, I don't want them to snap before I see them in bloom. I'll post pictures when they flower. :)
